Katie Kim – 20,500 Miles (mp3)

katie-kim

This morning the fog was heavy.  5:45 AM I was running.  My normally busy street was tranquil, dark…stark.  But there I was…running…my breath’s echo fading into the mist.  And my earphones unearth a gem of a cover I had managed to let slip by previously.  Katie Kim, an wonderful whisper out of Ireland, has crafted and subtle and unique cover of The Proclaimer’s “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, but transformed it into a midnight soaked folk creeper, “20,500 Miles”.  It fit perfectly with my morning.  Perhaps it will find a place with you as well.

I mentioned before that I completely spaced on posting on Katie Kim.  My deepest apologies.  She has a debut LP Twelve that is super sweet and available now on Bandcamp.  Here’s another stunner from it:

The end of Drink Up Buttercup was truly sad news.  They were one of my faves from the early days of Pasta Primavera and watching the transition from rough and energetic demos to the beauty of Born And Thrown On A Hook was quite the trip.  Not to worry, three of the four DUBs – James Harvey, Farzad Houshiarnejad, and Mike Cammarata – have rekindled into White Birds, a band that recalls moments of DUB.  But while the previous had highlights of the Beatles’ experimental submarine circus ride, White Birds’ comes stateside and dives deep into the ocean swallowed Beach Boys void – delicate, simple yet complex, sandy campfire folk travels.  Their White Birds tape is out now via Grizzly and its ALL GOOD front to back (you can stream it on Bandcamp).

Wise Blood – These Wings EP

wise-blood-these-wings

Putting the pieces back together.  Shredded R&B and Gospel sewn together by a punk minded bedroom scientist hell bent on mathematically devising a concoction you can pair with angst, hope, rage, energy, and inspiration all at the same time.  Pittsburgh’s Christopher Laufman aka Wise Blood has totally done this.  These Wings, his new EP, is friggin’ kick ass…and is out now via Dovecote.

My focus is drifting.  The waves are exceedingly high.  These synthesizers are solar powered sea floor light generators.  These melodies flood my eyes like they’ve always been there.  Moss of Aura‘s LP Wading takes everything I’ve ever heard by him, doubles, grows, triples, divides, quadruples, then evens out into a POWERful set of instrumentals.  The sounds aren’t new.  In fact they’re quite familiar, but he’s flexed them…into…Wading, a cinematic, hypnotic affair that has me feeling abducted.  Seriously, I’m losing time here.   Mr. Welmers, my boss is going to send you a bill for how much zoning out I did to your album (and enjoyed it).  So if you have some time for a little space-out vacation, go grab this album from Friends Records.

ARMS – Fleeced (mp3)

ARMS Summer Skills

Sweeeeeeet!  ARMS and Kids Aflame are a steady steady repeat play.  Shitty Little Disco was the same way.  I’m a fan.  So now they have this new LP Summer Skills coming out on November 8th and I could not be more pumped.  Judging by the first single, “Fleeced”, it’s going to be larger and more in charge than past ARMS explorations.

Retro rock without really sounding retro.  Fleety Macish without really getting all Fleety Mackin’.  Dominant Legs and their LP Invitation pound out some twisted throwback modern sunset rock jams that spin that radio dial into oblivion…and I…love…every…bit.  Is it pretty in a pink talking head of Paul Simon’s Steve Miller tribute band covering Tracy Chapman?  Yes.  But not as definite as that, because, of course Dominant Leg have their own fresh life pumped into this one.  Their first EP was a classic for me.  Invitation is now too.  It comes out on September 27th via Lefse.

Wild Flag

Wild-Flag

Let’s cut to the chase here.  Pat Benatar.  Joan Jett.  Garage Rock.  Punk Rock. Modern Rock?  ’N more (being the whole The Sleater-Kinney/Helium/Minders mixer-upper).  Wild Flag’s S/T LP is all of those things.  I dig all of those things…so it would mean that I dig Wild Flag, right?  Right-O!  The LP is out now via Merge.

Skeleton Zoo

skeleton zoo The Busride EP

Love songs for cyborgs.  Metal plated roses.  Memoire of a space cadet.  Neurons firing.  Bass rumbling.  Samples of obscure ticking/blending/morphing/morphine.  Skeleton Zoo, a duo of two friends Steve Goodwin and Ezekiel Bartnett, create seemingly nostalgic sci-fi coated instrumentals that make the inner robot glow a bit red.  Check out The Busride EP on bandcamp (for free) …meanwhile…
