Suggested Listening: Photons

Photons are an 8 piece band from San Francisco that managed to get lost in the shuffle.  Last year they sent me their outstanding self titled EP.  I listened.  I loved.  I never posted about it.  D’oh!  I was not going to make the same mistake this time with their new EP, Glory!.  Photons’ first EP drew some high praise from critics and grabbed some comparisons to The Walkmen.  I could definitely hear the similarities, but for some strange reason their early stuff really reminded me of Amsterdam’s Bingo Trappers (though not quite as lo-fi).  The Glory! EP is a richer, more developed, and better produced recording and has them receiving comparisons to bands like Arcade Fire now.  Again I hear where people are coming from on this one, but for some strange reason I could not get the idea out of my head that on Glory! Photons have a Bishop Allen covering Sisters Of Mercy type sound (or vice versa).  So now you’re probably saying to yourself, “Okay Laurent, you’ve just said that Photons sound like The Walkmen mashed with Bingo Trappers swirled with Arcade Fire colored with Sisters Of Mercy being covered by Bishop Allen or vice versa???!!”  Well…I guess I am.  Whatever the case may be, Photons play delightfully well orchestrated and complex pop rock.  You just might like it.
