New Parts & Labor “Receivers”

3 Dec

In October, Brooklyn’s Parts & Labor released their fourth album, Receivers, on Jagjaguwar.  Fans of their noise punk broken electronics wall of sound style might be surprised by the route they’ve decided to take for this release.  Receivers has P&L drawing out their explosive music with overlapping fields of sound giving it deep stadium sized power like Pink Floyd rather than their previous up front/in your face outputs from prior albums.  Perhaps this stemmed from P&L front men Dan Friel and BJ Warshaw seeking out drummer Joe Wong and guitarist Sarah Lipstate for Receivers.  Wong continues the big drum sound that Parts & Labor are lknown for while Lipstate augments her guitar sound with electronics, tape loops, and a bow, adding to their already dense experimental sound.  Another interesting tidbit about this album is that in April Parts & Labor had a call for audio submissions on their website for samples and field recordings of any sort.  From this they received hundreds of sounds that all managed to find their way into Receivers in shape or form.  That’s how grand an album Receivers is.  It encompasses you like a misty fog as the hot sun burns it away.
