Dark Was The Night – A Compilation You Should Own

22 Feb

I can’t seem to remember there ever being a compilation this chocked full of amazing original tracks.  You name it and it’s on Dark Was The Night – Sufjan Stevens, The Books, Feist, Grizzly Bear, Spoon, David Byrne, The Dirty Projectors, Jose Gonzalez, Ben Gibbard, Bon Iver, Yeasayer, The Decemberists, Iron and Wine, The National, Arcade Fire, Beirut, My Brightest Diamond, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Dave Sitek, Buck 65,  The New Pornographers, and more and more and more.  What makes it even grander is that this two disc set is all for a good cause.  The compilation was put together by Aaron Dessner of The National and all proceeds go to the Red Hot Organization, a charity that is dedicated to raise money for AIDS and HIV awareness through popular culture.  Buy the whole darn thing right now here or from Amazon.

As for my favorite track on this sweet thang, it has to go to Sufjan Stevens and his contribution “You Are The Blood”.  It closes the first disc and it’s epic.  It also has me thirsty for a new Stevens album.  C’mon man!  Don’t keep holdin’ out on us!

Great CD, the Sufjan track is fantastic, but I also like My Brightest Diamond and Andrew Bird’s contributions a lot – highly recommended!
