The Run Down – February 28, 2009

Time to celebrate the last day of February!!!  Here’s my suggestions…DC9 in DC is having their 5 Year Anniversary party and are featuring performances from Jukebox The Ghost and J-Roddy Walston and The Business.  Should be dynamite!  Also in DC are Benjy Ferree, Tim Fite, and Laughing Man.  They play the Black Cat.  The Velvet Lounge has a good one with Deleted Scenes, Batata Doce (ex Rock*A*Teens), and Mittenfields while Dan Aurebach takes down the 9:30 Club.  Hacienda and Those Darlins open for him.  Up in Philly classic hip hop is in town with the Black Sheep at the Khyber.  Zilla Rocca opens.  Finally don’t forget that Thievery Corporation play the Electric Factory and Tapes ‘n Tapes, Wild Light and The Subjects continue their tour through the area making a stop at Johnny Brenda’s.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – February 27, 2009

So the weekend is finally almost upon us and the concert gods have given us a lot to be thankful for.  Tonight in Baltimore the Talking Head has the Expontentials, The Izzy’s, and The Jagged Hearts while the trip hoppers Thievery Corporation play Rams Head Live.  Down in DC the Rock and Roll Hotel has a good one with Tapes ‘n Tapes, Wild Light, and The Subjects.  Also in DC are the Howlies, Tiger and the Snow, and Excuses (ex Len Bias) who play the Velvet Lounge and the funk master himself George Clinton who plays the 9:30 Club.  Philly has some sweet ones as well with Deer Tick and Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit at World Cafe Live and Ben Kweller and The Watson Twins at the Fillmore at the TLA.  Enjoy!

New Music: Wild Light

From the opening lyrics of the opening track on Wild Light’s debut album Adult Nights, I knew I was going to love it.  “California On My Mind” starts off like this:

Give me a lake that I can dive into/ Bury my head in the shit at the bottom/ Fuck today/ Fuck San Francisco/ Fuck California

Then the song kicks into gear like they were smoking some E Street Band.  Though their sound is moderate indie rock, Wild Light’s attitude is fierce.  If I had to make comparisons I’d say they were like Arcade Fire on Prozac.  Not quite as intense or grand or dark, but that majestic vibe is floating around in there.  I can see why they won Boston’s “Outstanding Rock Act Of The Year” award at the 2008 Boston Music Awards.

Adult Nights is due out on March 3rd on StarTime International and they are currently on tour with Tapes n Tapes.  Catch them in the area at the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC on February 27th and in Philly at Johnny Brenda’s on February 28th.
