AmpLive seems to be making a habit of remixing the wonderful world of WHY?. This time ’round he attacks WHY?’s “Bezerkley” by filling it up with his distinctive harsh cutting style. This match up just works. Check it:

WHY?’s Eskimo Snow has been getting some solid play as of late from me, but the track “One Rose” never really hit me the right way. Portland’s Alias and his remix of the track has made me LOVE this track (or at least his version of it). He pumps some serious electronic life through it.

Yoni Wolf and company have just released Eskimo Snow, an album that is the ying to the yang of last year’s Alopecia. On Eskimo Snow WHY? smooth out the angles of Alopecia and mixes in heavy folk elements to create some sort of bizarre Buck 65/Andrew Bird mash up that somehow works. While Alopecia is upbeat and more direct, Eskimo Snow slides, turns, rolls, hides, and attacks in a subtle manner – Wolf’s lyrics and delivery being the thing that holds it all together. This is why WHY? are fast becoming one of my favorite bands. There’s no formula or sound that dictates how every album should be. Sometimes they tap punk, sometimes, hip hop, sometimes electronica, sometimes folk. And, showing how masterful they are at their song writing craft, everything falls into place – with never feeling a loss of band identity. Eskimo Snow isn’t a top of the rotation album like Alopecia was for me, but it entertained for sure – especially with “This Blackest Purse” (perhaps one of my favorite tracks of the year).

LYRICS. This is why WHY? are always ace in my book no matter the sound twist or mood shift. Sure the first taste of WHY?’s upcoming Eskimo Snow, the track “The Blackest Purse”, is more subdued than I’m used to, but with lines like the one above paired with their stellar production, I can’t really complain. I just listen…and enjoy.

During a recent interview with Pitchfork Yoni Wolf of WHY? announced that they have a new album entitled Eskimo Snow coming out this fall. Apparently they recorded this album at the same time they recorded last years Alopecia. Wolf explained Eskimo Snow contains more solemn and introverted songs while the previous Alopecia had more of a sarcastic and biting tone. Eskimo Snow will be released on Anticon. We’ll be sure to let you know more details when the come about.
