It’s been a while for Chicago’s Tortoise, but they’re back with a new album after a five year break from the land of recording. It’s hard to believe Tortoise have been playing music for 20 years and Beacons Of Ancestorship is their 6th album (out via Thrill Jockey). With this album they’ve shown they still have the capacity to fuse together an electric cauldron of songs that could one moment be labeled jazz, the next club, the next industrial, the next noise rock, the next ambient, and so on. I guess you could label them UN-labelable (too bad that’s not even close to being a word). This genre defying sound is what sets Tortoise apart and why they’re one of my favorite instrumental bands out there. If pop music is boring you (which can happen occasionally) perhaps Beacons Of Ancestorship while be your soundtrack for the day/night. The album is due out on June 22/23 on Thrill Jockey.
