Remix: The Submarines Get Remixed by Ra Ra Riot and more

It’s nice to see such a fun light pop band like the Submarines get the remix treatment.  They’ve been nice enough to go all out with that idea by releasing two EPs, The Submarines Remixed 1 and The Submarines Remixed 2 (both out now).  The EPs feature remixes by the likes of Amplive, Ra Ra Riot, Tonetiger, Wallpaper, Styrofoam and more.  Here’s a few standouts:

The Run Down – February 9, 2009

It’s Monday…and I’m sick…fever burning me up…but before I go pass out I thought I’d pass on some insight on a few shows in the area.  Down in DC there’s a show I’d love to be at if I didn’t feel so crappy.  The Black Cat has The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and they’re fabulous.  The Depreciation Guild and Sugarplums open for them.  Up in Philly Johnny Brenda’s has a night of amazing pop wonders with The Morning Benders and The Submarines.  Also in Philly are Japanther, Totally Michael, and Ninjasonik over at Kungfu Necktie.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – February 8, 2009

Tonight in DC don’t miss Cat Power at the 9:30 Club…seriously…you don’t want to miss it.  Dex Romweber opens.  If you had to miss it hopefully it’s because you’re over at the Black Cat watching the Submarines and The Morning Benders perform or maybe you’re over in College Park, MD at the Third Rail Radio catching a performance from Baltimore’s Thrushes and Ceremony.  Up north in Philly there are two solid shows.  The first is The Explorers Club at the Khyber.  They have that amazing nostalgic sound that not many can duplicate.  In Grenada plays before them.  Kungfu Necktie has the second show and it’s a winner.  If I was in town I’d be basking in this show featuring The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Brown Recluse Sings, and Depreciation Guild.  Enjoy!

Swimming With The Submarines

Last week the Submarines released their sophomore effort, Honeysuckle Weeks, via Nettwerk to much praise.  I am here to further that praise.  This band from LA makes pristine pop garnished with electronica and sun rays on Honeysuckle Weeks.  This collection of songs are hand picked sweetness that only falls from the tree ever so often.  We’re lucky enough that it’s the right season.  The Submarines journey through club sized dynamite to british invasion guitar pop to deep bass dub in a matter of minutes, still managing to hold their unique identity as a band firmly in place.  Be sure to catch them at the North Star Bar in Philly on May 31st with Headlights or on June 1st at the Black Cat in DC also with Headlights.
