Friday (I’m A Remix) – MSTRKRFT/Bon Iver/Simian Mobile Disco/Boys Noize

This week has been an interesting one hasn’t it?  You’ve got the chimp attacking people then getting shot then inspiring a controversial comic strip for the New York Post criticizing Obama and the stimulus plan.  The Oceanic 6 are now back on the island…finally…and finally there’s an episode that had only one flash of light in it…they were getting a little excessive with that.  Tonight is also the last night for Conan O’Brien in the Big Apple.  I’m hoping it all works out for him on the west coast.  If you’re a sports fan the Orioles spring training is now in full swing… umm… whoopee?   Hard to get excited about that when we haven’t had a winning season since Quantum Leap was all the rage… but if you focus on the O’s perhaps it will take your mind off of the beating the Maryland Men’s Basketball team just took at Clemson…yikes.  I digress.  Here’s to hoping the weekend brings some cheer to all you folks.  Since I can’t serve alcohol on this blog here’s some remixes on the rocks.

Tonight in Baltimore the Hexagon has an allstar show with Video Hippos, Lizz King, Bagger Vance, Lemmy and Sean.  Over at the Ottobar there’s another show of note with Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus.  Down in DC the Black Cat has a fab event with Nightmare Of You, US Royalty, and Bottle Up & Go.  Up north in Philadelphia Kung Fu Necktie is where it’s at because they have The Soft Pack (formerly known as The Muslims) and The Browns (the band not the team).  Also in Philly don’t forget about The Rosebuds at Johnny Brenda’s.

The Rosebuds Announce ‘Life Like’ Album

You really never know what you’re going to get with Ivan and Kelly of The Rosebuds.  Their Unwind EP stroked my interest while their LP Birds Make Good Neighbors made me a legitimate fan.  Then they released their electro-dance infused Night Of The Furies and caught many (including myself) by surprise with the dramatic change in sound.  I eventually was able to accept the transformation and enjoy the album (though initially I was put off).  Now they’re back again.  What’s up?  Well apparently over the last year or so they spent time at home in Raleigh, NC recording demos and sketches of songs.  They realized they had more than enough material for a new album and decided to put things under way.  Ivan and Kelly have put the dance-tronics behind them and went with the more personal acoustic style that got them to where they are.  The album is called Life Like and is due out October 7, 2008 on Merge and features Portastatic’s Matthew McCaughan, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, and Ashley Stove’s Jim Brantley.  We’ll let you know more as we know more.  Until then, enjoy one of my favorites…

This is a fabulous Friday for shows. In Baltimore The Courtesy Line, Matt Pond Pa, and Pete Francis of Dispatch has been CANCELED at the Ottobar (though Pete Francis is still playing). Since you’re not going to be able to make that show, why not head to Sonar to catch Bear Hands and Live. In DC the Black Cat has the Oranges Band, Polvo, and Sir Arthur & His Royal Knights while The cure destroys the Patriot Center. In Philly The Khyber has a must see show with Jukebox The Ghost, The XYZ Affair, Grammar Debate, and The Swimmers. If you can’t make that one, you’re probably over at Johnny Brendas for British Sea Power, The Rosebuds and Jeffrey Lewis or possibly at the First Unitarian Church catching El-P, Busdriver, and Dizzee Rascal. If you’re in DC, the Black Cat has British Sea Power, The Rosebuds, and Jeffrey Lewis. The Rock and Roll Hotel hosts one of our faves, Bellman Barker along with The Cave Singers and Love As Laughter. Finally the 9:30 Club has El-P, Mr. Dibbs, The Mighty Quinn, Dizzee Rascal, and DJ Aaron LaCrate.

Record Store Day

So today is the official Record Store Day. Today record stores all over will be holding events and free give-aways so make sure you get out there and support them.
