Tonight I am only concerned with the 9:30 Club in DC and Nada Surf, The Jealous Girlfriends, and The Delta Spirit. If I had to focus on something else though I might have to trek on over to the University Of Maryland, College Park where Lupe Fiasco is playing it cool. Or perhaps if I was in Philly I’d stomp on over to the Fire and check Illinois, Orbit To Leslie, and Cicadian Rhythms. But Nada Surf is the main event and that’s all I’m concerned with.

Tonight in Baltimore there’s a super sweet show happening over at the Talking Head with Caleb Stine, Small Sur, Stephen Strohmeier, and Andy Abelow. Down in DC the Black Cat is featuring Baltimore’s Wye Oak and O’Death. Philly seems to be the hot spot with Yeasayer and Chairlift at the First Unitarian Church, Darker My Love, Strange Boys, and Asteroid #4 at Johnny Brenda’s, Nada Surf and The Jealous Girlfriends at the Trocadero, and Modern Skirts and The Old Ceremony at the M Room. Good night!

Possibly reigning as Pasta Primavera’s favorite band, Nada Surf will be back on tour in the US later this fall. Most tickets go on sale this Friday, so go get some. As I’ve railed about before, this is an amazing live band, sooooooo, go to the shows.
Delta Spirit and the Jealous Girlfriends will be along for the ride. And TJG are pretty good too.

While attending the fabulous show of Sea Wolf and The Jealous Girlfriends last Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hotel (reviewed here), Evilhomer and I were super excited to get a chance to sit down with singer/guitarist Holly and drummer Mike of The Jealous Girlfriends (reviewed here) for a friendly chat before they set out to hopefully get a proper sound check. As they walked in Holly spotted an old upright piano in the corner that she declared was the site of the after party. Both of them were a delight to speak with. To get a full sense of the mood, please add a great deal of laughter every other line or so. Read the full story after the jump.
PP: How Long have you been on this tour now?
Mike: One day.
Holly: Yeah we just got on this gravy train. 21 more shows I think.
PP: 21? That’s a lot of shows. We were lucky enough to catch you on tour with Nada Surf. What was it like touring with them?
Holly: Great. They’re great.
Mike: We live very close to them.
Holly: Mathew and I do laundry together.
PP: So you have this album, which is pretty great, if I do say so myself. What was going on in getting it ready for release?
Holly: This album has been ready for a while. We’ve just been waiting for the right equation. We kind of spiced it up a little. We added Secret Identity to the record and took off another song. It’s been a long time coming. I’m still excited about and I still listen to it…like alone

If you missed Sea Wolf and The Jealous Girlfriends this past Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hotel, now is your chance to catch them again, this time at the North Star Bar in Philly along with Cheers Elephant. If you’re in Baltimore tonight, Sonar has a super sweet show with Clinic and BBQ. Nice.

I may have entered some kind of temporal rift at the Rock and Roll Hotel in D.C. Sunday night. Maybe there was a small wormhole. Could have been a gravity boost. I can’t say for sure. But what I do know is that much of what I saw doesn’t quite fit in 2008. The stunning vocals from both Mary Beth of Don’t Be Glib and Holly of The Jealous Girlfriends exist in a jazz club in the 1920’s. And then there’s Sea Wolf. I’m fairly certain they found the fountain of youth in the 1850’s somewhere in the English countryside, and just waited 150 years to release their beautiful sound on the world.
Details, video’s and more gushing after the jump.

If you’re in Philly tonight you might want to head to the Danger Danger Gallery to see Baltimore’s Videohippos and dd/mm/yy. The Fillmore has our favorite dj/musician RJD2 with Conspirator. Finally in DC, there’s a super spectacular show at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Sea Wolf and the Jealous Girlfriends. Don’t miss it.

By all accounts I should have heard of The Jealous Girlfriends before. Their song Lay Around played on Showtime’s The L Word, two of their songs (off their upcoming album), Roboxulla and Something In The Water, were used on Grey’s Anatomy, while the song Carry Me was on CSI: Miami (which I usually turn off after the sunglasses go on). Their music video for How Now even won the IPod music video contest. So how is it that it took me so long to hear and love them? I guess it’s a thing called fate that brought me to them…or maybe it’s the fact that they opened for Nada Surf (wait…that’s probably it). The point is, if you haven’t heard them, DROP EVERYTHING and take a listen. Aside from the fact that their live show is an intense display of sheer rock goodness, The Jealous Girlfriends self titled LP (due out on April 22nd on Good Fences) grabbed me, slapped me, then hugged me. Blending the soulful voice of Holly Miranda with the soaring guitar of Holly Miranda with the smooth deep voice and red hair of Josh Abbott with the lush bass and keys of Alex Lipson with the daringly great drums of Mike Faden, this wonderful quartet from New York puts together a hypnotizing selection of spirituous pop rock. Many would probably say they have a New Pornographer type of sound, but I’ll take it a step further and say they are channeling the Pixies covering Fleetwood Mac. Decide for yourself when they play at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Sea Wolf on May 25th. Make sure you pick their album up on Tuesday.
