Oregon’s instrumental duo of Lisa Molinaro and Kevin O’Connor, aka Talkdemonic, stopped by the Daytrotter studios to record a unique set of songs. I fell into their beautifully dense Eyes At Half Mast album back in October and was most excited to hear some alternate versions. The album tracks were pretty rad, but my favorite is this unreleased gem:

I’ll admit it, it takes a lot for me to stay interested in some types of instrumental music. There has to be a clever blend of spices, musical skill, emotional movement, and some form of catchiness to catch my ear. The Oregon duo Talkdemonic succeed with a mesmerizing blend of sounds on their recently released LP Eyes At Half Mast (Arena Rock). Lisa Molinaro plays the viola while Kevin O’Connor covers everything from drums to synths to acoustic instruments. The album is full of tense ridges of sound eventually smoothing to still reflective lakes of resonance. Eyes At Half Mast took me on a unexpected sonic jaunt and expedited an otherwise mundane work day.

Tonight DC is alive with shows. The first one, taking place at the 9:30 Club, is Galactic. Next up is Talkdemonic, Bon Savants, and Albatross at the Red and the Black while Ra Ra Riot, Walter Meego, and The Morning Benders play the Black Cat. Finally up north in Philly don’t miss the MSTRKRFT Fist of God Tour at the Fillmore at the TLA featuring special guests LA Riots, Felix Cartel, and Congorock.

Tonight in Baltimore Title Tracks, The Caribbean, Moscow Telephone, and Nathan Bell play the Metro Gallery while Mesh, Google Eyes, Thrust Lab, and Chandeliers play the Hexagon. Also in town is the Atmosphere Paint The Nation Tour featuring Abstract Rude, Blueprint, and DJ Rare Groove at Rams Head Live. Down by DC in Virginia tonight is Middle Distance Runners 100th show (and first one in a while) and they’re playin with New Rock Church Of Fire. Should be a good one. Also in DC are Girl Talk with Grand Buffet and Hearts of Darkness at the 9:30 Club (late show) and Shudder To Think with Pattern Is Movement also at the 9:30 Club (early show 6pm). The Distric also has The Antiques, IfIHadAHiFi, White Wrench Conservatory, and The Fordists who play The Velvet Lounge. Up north in Philly The Khyber has Kill You In The Face, Talkdemonic, Bon Savants, and Randall Of Nazareth while The Electric Factory has TV on the Radio with Dirtbombs. The last show of note in Philadelphia is The Wedding Present, The Jealous Girlfriends, and Brown Recluse Sings who play the North Star Bar. Hopefully I didn’t leave anything out.
