Takka Takka Covers Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight

phil-collins-20060910-159813

I’m not one to post too many covers on this blog.  In fact I can’t even remember the last one I put up, but I take exception when someone covers Phil Collins.  Yeah, I’ll admit it.  I’m a fan of the Philster.  I’m also a fan of NYC’s Takka Takka.  So when I Hope Your Ears Bleed posted up this cover of Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” I was psyched to say the least.  They transform the song in a way they could only do:

In a random trivia note – “In The Air Tonight” is the song that pumps up Ravens’ hall of fame middle linebacker Ray Lewis before every game.  Told you it was random.  Just for that here’s a bonus remix of Takka Takka:

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

mp3: Nada Surf – The Fox

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

mp3: Department Of Eagles – Herring Bone

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

mp3: The Walkmen – On The Water

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

Buy Youth Novels

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

Takka Takka Daytrotter Session

At the beginning of December Brooklyn’s Takka Takka rolled into the Daytrotter studios a recorded some new live versions of four tracks off of their recent release MigrationI’m a big fan of theirs but haven’t heard them live so I was anxious how their sound would translate.  Pretty well I must say.   My favorite of the session was Silence (would of loved to hear Lion In The Waves) which apparently is one of the more difficult songs to perform for them because of the “crazy” keyboard sounds.  Go here for the full article and songs, but here’s a taste:

The Time Of Takka Takka

New York’s Takka Takka released a new album, Migration, earlier this year and I must say it’s quite a trip.  Gabe Levine (of Takka Takka) says this record is about existing in a place you don’t belong, his mother (who recently decided to become a Balinese holy person), a band experimenting with sound and form, trying to honestly say things in sing it has never said before, and not going back and staying in the place you don’t belong.  When I listen to Migration I not only hear pieces of Levine’s intentions, I see and feel them as well.  Migration moves through my ears like a video camera floating across the world recording the movements of life and culture.  Takka Takka’s minimalist experimental pop sound can shrink to a soft drum murmur or swell to mountainous reverberations within the confines of a single song.  The stand out track for me is the beautiful Lion In The Waves which consists of vocals, guitar, and something mysterious.  Simple.  Fragile.  Powerful.
