I know I just posted on the strange but weird “This Must Be It” video from Royksopp and Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Anderson, but soon after I discovered that Royksopp had started a remix contest for perhaps my favorite track off Junior, “Tricky Tricky” which also feature the haunting voice of Dreijer Anderson. The contest is closed now and I’ve heard a lot of marginal efforts. By far my fave is the spaced out Salem [**CORRECTION - this is Salem but not the Salem you think of when you read the name Salem. I was duped. Oh well. It's not the first time and it certainly won't be the last. THIS Salem is from Sweden**] version. They take that minimal electronic back bone synth line and splatter it with psychedelia. The outcome sounds a lot like early 90s electronic industrial pop a la Depeche Mode’s Violator. That’s aces in my book.

Beck, ya gotta love ‘em. Not only does he consistently produce strong album after strong album, he also enjoys being the innovator. A new section has been added to his website called “Record Club” where he and a group of pals go into the studio to cover/record an entire classic album. The first of which is the famous/infamous and essential The Velvet Underground & Nico. There will more tunes popping up on his site from this recording session, but for now take an ear to “Sunday Morning”.

Also this isn’t the first time Beck went on a cover streak is it?

Seems like the river of remixes never end these days and most of the time I watch them float on by, but I take exception when the Starters DJs are in on it. Their new remix of Royksopp’s “The Girl and The Robot” is a solid effort. Thanks to Sheena Beaston!

Royksopp’s track “Vision One” is a slow grinding building sweetness of a song…really I don’t want to hear it any other way. So here comes our old pal MMMatthias with his remake of the tune. The once low to the floor snake of a song becomes a bouncy affair with cut up breaks and valleys that deteriorate and build back. A heavy dance robotic feel that is good for the end of the week.

I’m a little late to the game on the Royksopp tip, but I’m starting to get into their new album Junior (due out March 23rd). The duo from Norway produce catchy electro hazes that are pleasant to the ears and feet. That being said I thought the highlight for me would be the track “Miss It So Much” which features the amazing Lykke Li. Don’t get me wrong the song is acceptable, but Lykke Li has such a powerful presence that simply isn’t brought out in this song. It’s more of a swirling electro merry go round that occasionally rotates around and you hear a sparkle of Lykke Li. Still good though – just not great…and we all could use a little more great. And don’t forget, Mr. Kanye West approves!

What do you think?

Norway’s Royksopp definitely have some buzz going with there new single “Happy Up Here”. There seems to be a new remix coming out everyday. After Boys Noize killed I thought nothing could come close, but in comes Holy Fuck and there stellar ability to almost re write the song while still having it’s essence at the core. Holy Fuck takes “Happy Up Here” and it’s bright colorful bounces and welds them to silver and steel with a groove that makes you just want to watch the hash marks on the road flip by as you drive into the city. Gorgeous mid tempo funk that is good for any moment.

Of course if I talk about Holy Fuck remixes, I have to put this one up:

This week has been an interesting one hasn’t it? You’ve got the chimp attacking people then getting shot then inspiring a controversial comic strip for the New York Post criticizing Obama and the stimulus plan. The Oceanic 6 are now back on the island…finally…and finally there’s an episode that had only one flash of light in it…they were getting a little excessive with that. Tonight is also the last night for Conan O’Brien in the Big Apple. I’m hoping it all works out for him on the west coast. If you’re a sports fan the Orioles spring training is now in full swing… umm… whoopee? Hard to get excited about that when we haven’t had a winning season since Quantum Leap was all the rage… but if you focus on the O’s perhaps it will take your mind off of the beating the Maryland Men’s Basketball team just took at Clemson…yikes. I digress. Here’s to hoping the weekend brings some cheer to all you folks. Since I can’t serve alcohol on this blog here’s some remixes on the rocks.
