The Run Down – Thursday November 13, 2008

Tonight in Baltimore, Metro Gallery has another fine free show with Dancer vs. Politician while the mazing Diplo comes to Charm City to Sonar with No Age, Abe Vigoda, Boy 8 Bit, and Telepathe.  Down in DC, don’t miss School Of Seven Bells and M83 at the Black Cat or Calexico and The Acorn at the 9:30 Club.  Up in Philly, Hot Guts, Royal Bangs, and Fun Dogs tear down the Khyber while Colour Revolt, Restorations, Padre Pio, and Castle Worries play the M Room.  Also in Philly the First Unitarian Church has a dazzler with Crystal Castles.

Bonnaroo schedule announced. So many decisions to make.

The schedule for this years Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was announced today. Check it out HERE.

Here are my early impressions:

  • I’ll be at This Tent for the first day with highlights including What Made Milwaukee Famous, Superdrag, MGMT and Vampire Weekend.
  • Thursday will be a looooong first day. The Royal Bangs close the Troo Music lounge from 1:30-2:30 Friday morning.
  • I will not see Superjam this year, because My Morning Jacket will have me mesmerized.
  • Chris Rock performing right before Metallica is going to be weird.
  • Saturday didn’t excite me too much until I saw Sigur Ros playing the late night set at That Tent. I am so geeked for that performance.
  • Now, c’mon Bonnaroo. Rogue Wave on Sunday at 1pm. Thats just mean. I’ll be tired by then. And lazy. What do I look like, a guy who’s not lazy?
  • I’m going to need to make a lot of tough choices this year. Superdrag vs. Grand Ole Party, Willie Nelson vs. Rilo Kiley, Ben Folds vs. B.B. King, Steel Train and Fiery Furnaces vs. Me not moving much saturday morning
  • Bonnaroo 2008 is going to be amazing. Get pumped.
  • If you’re confused about what “this tent” and “that tent” mean, you have never been to Bonnaroo.

Royal Bangs Cut It Up

What’s there not to like about Knoxville, Tennessee? I mean come on. Superdrag… AWESOME. The Sun Sphere …. AWESOME. The Wig Sphere…. AWESOME. Now…. Royal Bangs… yup… AWESOME. This five member group blazes out of the ‘ville brandishing a unique electro rock sound that sounds too old school to be new wave and too new school to be…um… old school. They’ve pretty much played everywhere down south including a stint at some festival called Bonnaroo. Now they have an album coming out on May 13th called We Breed Champions on Audio Eagle. I was pretty taken when I first listened to it. The Knoxville Voice compared them to “Radiohead vs. fifteen bottles of Southern Comfort.” First of all anybody with 15 bottles of So-Co is not going to sound good, but I see where they’re going with that. Second of all, I would say they sounded more like the Rolling Stones gettin’ all crazy-like with keyboards when Van Morrison kicks down the wall and goes crazy (like Aerosmith vs. Run-DMC ‘Walk This Way’ style). This is Royal Bangs. Intelligent, yet rough around the edges, electro rock that knows no boundaries.
