Tomorrow night in DC straight outta Philly comes RJD2 to the 9:30 Club. I have just reviewed his new album The Colossushere, and, despite how you might feel about his last album (or this new one), RJ is killer live. Whether he’s singing, scratching, or donning the persona of “Mo Buttons” on stage – he simply flat out rocks it. So if you’re looking for a solid show to go to on Saturday night, consider RJ. Atlanta’s The Constellations and Ohio’s Happy Chichester open.
One of the first releases I was pumped about for 2010 was my boy RJD2’s 4th LP The Colossus, the first on his own label RJ’s Electrical Connections. People hoping for a new Deadringer will be disappointed. People hoping that it wasn’t another The Third Hand can be happy. The Colossus is more along the lines of his second album Since We Last Spoke, though RJ is still dabbling in the singing department (ala The Third Hand) with this one. I would say about 1/3 of the album is too R&B-ish for my tastes, but the other 2/3 is solid and shows off RJ’s knack for stuttered yet funky beats and unique melody riffs/hooks. The highlight for me comes on “A Son’s Cycle” which features Catalyst, Illogic, and NP. RJD2 goes back to hip hop with this murky track…a place I wish he would have visited a bit more on the LP.
Here’s the lead single from The Colossus featuring Kenna:
YES! For those who don’t know I’m a big RJD2 fan. I still recall the first time I glanced at the Deadringer CD on the rack….contemplating whether a disc with a bloodied up dude might actually sound decent. So I took a chance and he’s been making my ears happy for years. His last album The Third Hand was a bit of a departure for him – ditching the turn tables and samplers for a full band sound with him singing. I have to admit that it didn’t hit it off right away, but appreciated the experimentation. In January RJD2 will release a new album, The Colossus, on his new record label RJ’s Electrical Connections and it appears that he’s going back to his bread and butter for the most part as well as enlisting a few folks to collaborate. Check the track list after the jump and check some favorites right here:
If you’re in Philly tonight you might want to head to the Danger Danger Gallery to see Baltimore’s Videohippos and dd/mm/yy. The Fillmore has our favorite dj/musician RJD2 with Conspirator. Finally in DC, there’s a super spectacular show at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Sea Wolf and the Jealous Girlfriends. Don’t miss it.
In DC tonight you might not want to miss the one and only KRS-One at the Black Cat with Kokayi. He never puts on a bad show. If you are missing it, maybe you’re heading out to the Rock and Roll Hotel to catch Black Moth Super Rainbow, Subtle, Efterklang, and Slaraffenland. Or maybe, just maybe, you’re lucky enough to get up to Philly and witness the Jam On The River at Penn’s Landing which features The Flaming Lips, RJD2, and Josh Ritter.

MAY DAY! Celebrate it at Baltimore’s Charm City Art Space with Denton, Texas’ own Fishboy, The Up Set, Thee Lexington Arrows, and Markitect. Or perhaps you would like to go to DC for RJD2 and Happy Chichester at the 9:30 Club. Another option is Langhorne Slim performing at Iota. Finally you could head north to see Steve Goldberg and the Archenemies perform at The Fire in Philly with Sarah White and Sleeper Car.
What are birthdays? What are weekends? What are parties? I’m not quite sure either, but I know if you combine these three things with music, food, and liquids, you’ll experience what I’m about to experience tonight. Yep, you guessed it…it’s my birthday…and a party is a comin’. Here’s but a slice of the music I’ll be listening to tonight…some new…some old…all friggin’ great. Enjoy! Go Pisces!
