Remix: Cale Parks takes on Ra Ra Riot’s “Dying Is Fine”

cale parks

I love me some Cale Parks.  Just when my admiration of the fab album of his, Sparklace, was starting to fade, he drops this bomb remix of Ra Ra Riot’s “Dying Is Fine”.  If you need a stuttering bass drum beat to break you out of that endless stutter of a day – this should do the trick:

or if you’re in the mood for the original…

Vampire Weekend + Ra Ra Riot = Discovery

Apparently this  super indie band team up has been in the works for a while now, but for those who don’t know Rostam Batmanglij of  Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot have joined forces to form Discovery – an electronic rock pop excursion that obviously warrants some attention. They’ve put out a few old tracks, but there’s something slated on the horizon for 2009 (a summertime album).

There’s also this rad remix they did as well of a familiar band…

Remix: The Submarines Get Remixed by Ra Ra Riot and more

It’s nice to see such a fun light pop band like the Submarines get the remix treatment.  They’ve been nice enough to go all out with that idea by releasing two EPs, The Submarines Remixed 1 and The Submarines Remixed 2 (both out now).  The EPs feature remixes by the likes of Amplive, Ra Ra Riot, Tonetiger, Wallpaper, Styrofoam and more.  Here’s a few standouts:

The Run Down – January 25, 2009

After a busy Friday and Saturday for shows, today seems a bit calm.  But in DC there’s a good one at the Black Cat with The Aquarium, Dennis Kane, and The Finish.  Up in Philly Yo! Majesty, The Floacist, and Sgt. Sass play the M Room while the main event is over at the Fillmore at the TLA.  There a dynamite show with Andrew Bird and Ra Ra Riot will surely be amazing.

The Run Down – January 23, 2009

So here comes the weekend!  Baltimore has some sweet happenings that I thought I’d mention.  The Ottobar has Longwave, Colourmusic, and the Payola Reserve while the Recher Theatre has the Drive-By Truckers.  Down in DC the 9:30 Club has Lionize and The Players while the Black Cat has Junior League Band, Hoots and Hellmouth and O’Tasty.  Also don’t forget that Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears are playing the Rock and Roll Hotel.  Not too far from there in Vienna, Virginia Nicole Reynolds plays Jammin Java with Chris Pureka and Redshift. Up in Philly the North Star Bar has a good one with Xylos and The Honey Brothers while DeVotchKa plays World Cafe Live.  The Fire has New Yorks Naked Hearts and The Antlers and finally don’t miss out on Ra Ra Riot’s show out at  Swarthmore College.  Enjoy!

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

mp3: Nada Surf – The Fox

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

mp3: Department Of Eagles – Herring Bone

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

mp3: The Walkmen – On The Water

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

mp3: Lykke Li – Little Bit

Buy Youth Novels

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

mp3: Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone

Buy Glasvegas

Those were the main highlights for me, but these albums also brought much joy to me throughout the year:

The Run Down – December 15-16 2008

The start of the week is relatively slow for shows but there’s one tonight that’s definitely worth pointing out if you live in the Philadelphia area.  Bon Iver and Tallest Man On Earth (not literally, just the band) play the Trocadero.  Should be a good one so get going!

mp3: Bon Iver – Lump Sum

Tomorrow there’s also a show that shouldn’t be omitted from this run down.  Baltimore finally gets the make up show from the previously cancelled Ra Ra Riot date at the Ottobar.  This time ’round they’re playing with Princeton and So Many Dynamos.  That’s an awesome show if I do say myself.
