New Orbit To Leslie – The World Was Saved With Chocolate Cake [album]

orbit to leslie

Philadelphia’s Orbit To Leslie, the side project of Chris Wood (of Downtown Harvest – who I just posted on a few days ago), has taken a more serious turn with the release of their debut album The World Was Saved With Chocolate Cake (out via Obvious Bandits).   Wood is a talented songwriter/artist – there was no doubt about it since I first heard his demos back in March.  This album makes it a fact.  Get the album here and check their CD release show at Johnny Brenda’s on January 15th.

Suggested Listening: Orbit To Leslie

When I first caught on to Philadelphia’s Orbit To Leslie, I was shocked to find that it was just a side project of Chris Wood aka C. Dubbs – the drummer of Grimace Federation and Downtown Harvest.  In my humble opinion I hope Wood considers sticking with Orbit To Leslie.  From the five songs I’ve heard, there’s something special going on.  No surprise here, the music of Orbit To Leslie is predominantly drum drive, riding waves of afro-beat and post rock to wash up on the shores of an island of pop.  They actually remind me of Baltimore/DC band Deleted Scenes in that they take an alternative route to achieve compelling modern rock that isn’t over done.  Enough talk, listen:

The Run Down – February 13, 2009

Every body’s day of unluck has arrived full of black cats, shattered mirrors, and sidewalks full of ladders to walk under.  How about avoiding all that crap and go to some shows?  There’s a ton!  First here in Baltimore the Metro Gallery has The Snowmen, Cortez Cortez, and Inflatable Hair (1/2 of Impossible Hair) while the Zodiac gets everyone ready for Valentine’s Day with Beach House, The Creepers, and Dodgers.  If you want something with a bit more bounce head over to Sonar to see Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, DJ P-Funk, and Busy Bee.  If you want to do some good, how about heading over to the Senator for the Save The Senator benefit show featuring Wye Oak, Jana Hunter, The John Hardy Boys, US Royalty, Payola Reserve, and more.  Also down in Annapolis The Whiskey has Baltimore’s Telesma.  Down in DC there’s Imperial China and New Rock Church Of Fire at the Rock and Roll Hotel while Jason Mraz and Ben Folds play the Smith Center.  Up north in Philly the Northern Liberties Festival continues at the Fire with Drink Up Buttercup (awesome), Orbit To Leslie (also awesome), The Lisps (super awesome), Jotto (pretty rad), Hezekiah Jones (so awesome even my mom likes ‘em), and Spinning Leaves (also pretty friggin rad).  That’s an awesomely rad show!  Good luck!
