Every body’s day of unluck has arrived full of black cats, shattered mirrors, and sidewalks full of ladders to walk under. How about avoiding all that crap and go to some shows? There’s a ton! First here in Baltimore the Metro Gallery has The Snowmen, Cortez Cortez, and Inflatable Hair (1/2 of Impossible Hair) while the Zodiac gets everyone ready for Valentine’s Day with Beach House, The Creepers, and Dodgers. If you want something with a bit more bounce head over to Sonar to see Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, DJ P-Funk, and Busy Bee. If you want to do some good, how about heading over to the Senator for the Save The Senator benefit show featuring Wye Oak, Jana Hunter, The John Hardy Boys, US Royalty, Payola Reserve, and more. Also down in Annapolis The Whiskey has Baltimore’s Telesma. Down in DC there’s Imperial China and New Rock Church Of Fire at the Rock and Roll Hotel while Jason Mraz and Ben Folds play the Smith Center. Up north in Philly the Northern Liberties Festival continues at the Fire with Drink Up Buttercup (awesome), Orbit To Leslie (also awesome), The Lisps (super awesome), Jotto (pretty rad), Hezekiah Jones (so awesome even my mom likes ‘em), and Spinning Leaves (also pretty friggin rad). DC’s New Rock Church Of Fire put a new album out at the end of last year and I’ve just realized I never posted about. A travesty. For shame. Back when the album, Of The Wild, first came to me, in the instant before I pressed play, the thought occurred to me…could this album possibly match the intensity that New Rock brings to their live show? 39 minutes later I came to find out….no. But it’s pretty close (in all reality most albums don’t come close to matching the energy brought to a live show). New Rock Church Of Fire do come out blazing Of The Wild with their unique style of punk thrash indie pop rock that blends Joe Strummer and Black Sabbath into a potent punch. A sound that can blast windows and have you singing along at the same time. “Epic” is usually a term that is thrown around when describing New Rock Church Of Fire. If you’re looking for epic then look no further than one of my favorite tracks off Of The Wild, “On Salisbury Plain”.

Now that all that holiday cheer has begun to thaw out a bit perhaps it’s time to rock? If you’re in DC it sure is. The 9:30 club has New Rock Church Of Fire’s cd release show and features performances by The Dance Party and Crash Boom Bang. Also in DC at the Black Cat, Olivia Mancini & The Housemetes take the stage with Tereu Tereu and Revival opening. Finally up north in Philly Johnny Brenda’s has a great one with The Brakes and Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka. Enjoy!
