Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

mp3: Department Of Eagles – Herring Bone

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

mp3: The Walkmen – On The Water

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

mp3: Lykke Li – Little Bit

Buy Youth Novels

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

mp3: Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone

Buy Glasvegas

Those were the main highlights for me, but these albums also brought much joy to me throughout the year:

mp3: Eureka Birds – The Still Life

The Run Down – Friday December 5, 2008

Tonight I am only concerned with the 9:30 Club in DC and Nada Surf, The Jealous Girlfriends, and The Delta Spirit.  If I had to focus on something else though I might have to trek on over to the University Of Maryland, College Park where Lupe Fiasco is playing it cool.  Or perhaps if I was in Philly I’d stomp on over to the Fire and check Illinois, Orbit To Leslie, and Cicadian Rhythms.  But Nada Surf is the main event and that’s all I’m concerned with.

mp3: The Jealous Girlfriends – Gifthorse

The Run Down – Thursday December 4, 2008

Tonight in Baltimore there’s a super sweet show happening over at the Talking Head with Caleb Stine, Small Sur, Stephen Strohmeier, and Andy Abelow.  Down in DC the Black Cat is featuring Baltimore’s Wye Oak and O’Death.  Philly seems to be the hot spot with Yeasayer and Chairlift at the First Unitarian Church, Darker My Love, Strange Boys, and Asteroid #4 at Johnny Brenda’s, Nada Surf and The Jealous Girlfriends at the Trocadero, and Modern Skirts and The Old Ceremony at the M Room.  Good night!

New Nada Surf “No Quick Fix”

Today Nada Surf’s Vinyl Box Set comes out via Barsuk and it compiles all of their music on record from 1994-2008 (buy it here).  Pretty sweet huh?  Well to make it even sweeter the folks over at Barsuk decided to give out this little freebie called “No Quick Fix”.  It’s one of the free downloads you’ll receive if you order the box set.  The song was originally recorded during the Let Go era (which you can tell by the sound of it) and is gorgeous.  Listening to this track completely makes my day a bit brighter.  It also gets me pumped for their tour that’s rolling through town on December 5th at the 9:30 Club.  They’re playing with the Jealous Girlfriends (who are amazing) and The Delta Spirit.  Here’s the track and check all their tour dates after the jump.

A Simple Thank You

Well one year ago today we put up our first post here on Pasta Primavera, and I thought I should write a little somethin’ somethin’ to reflect back on our first year in the blogosphere.  Years ago I wanted to start a music blog, but I was working a certain crappy job that paid the bills, but didn’t leave much time for anything else.  So I was content on reading blogs like Gorilla Vs. Bear, I Guess I’m Floating, 3hive, Sixeyes, and So Much Silence for my music fix.  A little over 13 months ago I was fortunately able to ditch that job for a new one that let my mind (and time) ease up a bit, and that’s when I thought up the idea for the blog Pasta Primavera (the name has it’s origin from the Beastie Boys lyric ‘I’m all mixed up like pasta primavera‘ from What Comes Around off of Paul’s Boutique).  JB, Simon (evilhomer), and I joined forces just to share our thoughts on music with each other.  We really didn’t think anyone would find us and actually read what we were writing.  A few months into it we realized that people were actually reading so we started to take things a bit more seriously (well not that serious, but serious enough to say we’re serious).  We also began to take notice of the enormous and awesome music scene from the Baltimore/DC/Philly section of the east coast and made a goal to support it to the best of our abilities.  After that things were just a blast.  Tons of great music constantly passes through our ears and we try our best to pass it on to you.  Finally I just want to say thanks…to everyone who has spent more than a second perusing our site in search of that musical note to brighten your day.  Without you we’d just be some blog somewhere doing something.  With you, we’re Pasta Primavera.  Here’s to reminiscing….

The news keeps on coming in and it seems to always be great. You may have heard that Wolf Parade will be releasing a new album on June 17th. You may have also heard me say years ago that Wolf Parade was the best thing to happen to music since sliced Bread…no? Well maybe I’m a tad crazy, but go ahead and feast on this new track.

In other news, NPR has done us all a great thing by streaming the entire Nada Surf show from the 9:30 club that we attended last Saturday right here. Enjoy!
