Suggested Listening: Joakim

I have to say that the world of remixes can be a bit over done sometimes.  Sometimes it’s down right awful.  But in the same accord there are some seriously sweet things happening too.  And sometimes it can lead you to discover a band/artist you might not have come across in the first place.  Take France’s Joakim for instance.  Sure many people have blogged and emailed about him a dozen times over, but for some odd reason I just never pressed play.  The other day a Joakim remix of Metronomy’s “Not Made For Love” floated into my inbox and I thought to myself, “Hey I dig Metronomy a good deal…so I guess I’ll spin this one time right now.”  I’m so glad I did.  The remix was some badass electronic pop wonderment.  So I hunted for more on Joakim and was further impressed.  His new album Milky Ways (featuring his band The Disco) is a swirling travel through ever genre of music you can think.  Kraut rock, disco, electronica, club, indie rock, etc.  This dudes like Ragu…it’s in there.  But instead of sounding schizophrenic, it actually flows, blends…and shines.  Check out some of my faves:

Remix: The Very Best’s Warm Heart Of Africa gets remixed by Architecture In Helsinki and Metronomy

the very best

The Very Best’s Warm Heart Of Africa album/first single is on the tip of everyone’s ear being hyped all over – and with good cause.  The Esau Mwamwaya and DJ Radioclit duo produced a supreme free mixtape last year and this debut album looks to follow suit.  Recently Architecture In Helsinki and Metronomy each took their turn at remixing the title track and the end results are two tracks on different sides of the spectrum.  Personally the bedroom pop feel of AIH’s version appeals to me.  I don’t hear too many remixes sounding this charming and quaint.  It’s a bit refreshing if I do say so myself.

Warm Heart Of Africa is due out on September 14th via Rough Trade and you can preorder here (comes with a bonus disc!)

Remix: The Mae Shi take on Metronomy’s “Radio Ladio”

A few weeks back I posted Micachu’s sparse drum heavy low down remix of Metronomy’s “Radio Ladio”.  Now LA’s the Mae Shi get their turn on the track and it’s quite the bright and fuzzy one.  With thick crunchy synths all over the place, this remix is hard not to love.

Remix: Micachu takes on Metronomy’s “Radio Ladio”

I’ve just started getting into the electronic funk of London’s Metronomy and their album Nights Out.  On the flip side I just received a sweet new album from London’s Micachu & The Shapes that reminds me of everything good about Deerhoof.  So when I ran across the Micachu remix of Metronomy’s “Radio Ladio” I was intrigued to say the least.  Micachu take the smooth disco beat and bassline out of “Radio Ladio” and insert a low slow get as low to the ground type of beat that makes me sweat listening to it.  Perfect on a cold day.  We’ll have more on both of these artists in the future, but for now take a listen to the combo:

Friday (I’m A Remix)

This week seriously tested my patience.  A crazy schedule swirling around my brain for much of it made my tolerance level very small.  Then come to find out that low and behold some bastard hacked this very site you are on.  Wah?!!  So who ever you are or where ever you came from hacker… I’m on to you (imagine some shifty eye movements with this phrase).  Don’t let me catch you ’round these parts again.  Ya’here?  Thankfully there’s been some grand music passing by my ears lately to calm me down.  Segway…

Friday (I’m A Remix)

Here we are 4 weeks away from election day.  Hopefully everyone has registered and is ready to press the right buttons on that looming Tuesday.  I’m not one to get too political on this blog, but how’s your outlook for the upcoming election?  Here’s some remixes to stroke your mind:

Friday (I’m A Remix)

The other week I decide to give up coffee.  Why?  Because I’m an idiot.  I didn’t realize how much those little beans had taken over me.  Now when I walk by someone with a cup of joe, I just want to grab out of their hands, guzzle that dark fuel down, then go raving mad throughout the streets.  So if you see a crazed man staring at your cup of coffee today…do the right thing…go the other way…quickly.  Luckily I have these remixes to calm me down (or perhaps rile me up).
