Mason Proper Release FREE Remix EP

mp-remix-art3

Not only are Mason Proper a band that produced one of my most addicted to albums last year with Olly Oxen Free, they’ve just upped the ante with a new FREE Remix EP.  It features remixes of the tracks “Safe For The Time Being” by Wallpaper. and the Paronomasiac and “Lock and Key” by Ocelot.   Get the full thing here.  Meanwhile check these two very different sounding remixes:

Mason Proper have already proven to me that they are a band that can produce an album full of stunning, rich, and catchy pop rock.  Now they’ve taken it to a whole new level with this hybrid cover they just put out.  Check it:

New Music From Mason Proper Frontman – Bung Lung Baby

Last year Jonathan Visger, lead singer of Mason Proper, released his second solo EP, this time under the moniker Bug Lung BabyTrilobite Trash is up for free download over at RCRDLBL.com.  It’s no surprise that it sounds a lot like Mason Proper (Visger’s voice is fairly unique so it sticks out like that) except there’s a bit more overdubbing and layering of samples and beats.   And just like Mason Proper, I can’t seem to stop listening to it.  “Paper Crane” is my pick of the EP with its beautiful and engaging spliced guitar riff samples.

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

mp3: Nada Surf – The Fox

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

mp3: Department Of Eagles – Herring Bone

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

mp3: The Walkmen – On The Water

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

mp3: Lykke Li – Little Bit

Buy Youth Novels

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

Props To Mason Proper

You know the deal with a band’s sophomore album.  It will either propel them into the glorious cloud nine where awesome bands play hop scotch, dance all night, and party all day…or it will send them to the depths of the earth never to be heard again.  Luckily for Mason Proper (and for us) Olly Oxen Free (Dovecote Records), their second album, has some serious wings and has been flying ’round my head for weeks.  This year Mason Proper decided to join forces with Chris Coady (producer who has worked with TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Blonde Redhead) and rented a small empty house for a month to record the album.  After that, lead singer Jonathan Visger met up with Coady again to mix Olly Oxen Free on the same console the Pixies’ Doolittle was mixed on.  Some of that Pixie dust has coated this Mason Proper release, and I’m enjoying the results.  Infectious melody, strong (and catchy) lyrics, and some serious head swaying production have Olly Oxen Free perched steadily atop of my music rotation right now.  If you get a chance, check them out on tour with Cloud Cult (the dates after the jump).
