Remix: Grandtheft takes on Lykke Li’s “Dance Dance Dance”

I know I know I know.  Another Lykke Li remix?  The thing is I love Lykke Li.  In turn I love a good remix.  So as long as the remixes are stellar I feel the obligation to post about them.  The latest conjuration is from Montreal’s Grandtheft and their blustering version of “Dance Dance Dance”.  I must say the stuttering bass line that moves this track into overdrive is compelling (the cowbell is swell as well).  Certainly has me playing the track VERY LOUD (sorry neighbors).

Remix: Villains take on Lykke Li’s “Little Bit”

I know I know I know….Lykke Li has been remixed a gigazzillion times…but this one comes straight outta Cali from Villains.  They make “Little Bit” as dance floor ready as it could ever be.  So take this track and start up that April Fools Party you were contemplating when you woke up.  Yeah!

New Royksopp – “Miss It So Much (feat. Lykke Li)

I’m a little late to the game on the Royksopp tip, but I’m starting to get into their new album Junior (due out March 23rd).  The duo from Norway produce catchy electro hazes that are pleasant to the ears and feet.  That being said I thought the highlight for me would be the track “Miss It So Much” which features the amazing Lykke Li.  Don’t get me wrong the song is acceptable, but Lykke Li has such a powerful presence that simply isn’t brought out in this song.  It’s more of a swirling electro merry go round that occasionally rotates around and you hear a sparkle of Lykke Li.  Still good though – just not great…and we all could use a little more great.  And don’t forget, Mr. Kanye West approves!

New Lykke Li Video “Tonight” plus New Version Of The Song

So I’m a bit slow getting to  it, but at the end of January Lykke Li released a new video for the track “Tonight” off of Youth Novels.  The vid is fairly simple, her singing with in black and white and nothing else (a bit like Sinead), but the cool part is that this is a new version recorded in one take just for the video.  Check it out:

Pretty amazing version right?  Not sure which I like better, the original or this one.  Both beautiful tracks but I really ate up the Twin Peaks-esque bass that flows all over the new version.  Thanks to IGIF we can compare the two right now:

Friday (I’m A Remix)

So this week was crappy.  Cold.  Ice.  Tough sledding in DC (I still have faith Obama will get it together).  Tough sledding in Tampa (not a Steelers fan – though I do admit they were pretty good).  Work was a big headache on most of the days.  If it wasn’t for my lovely family and the new episode of Lost…I would be downright miserable right now.  Luckily it’s the start of the weekend now.  The weather is going to warm up and the sun is going to come out and shine it’s shine down on my shiney forehead and…I’ll smile…and forget about all that crap…and…drum up some optimism for the following week.  Maybe these will help you bring a little sunshine in:

The Run Down – January 31, 2009

If you’re hanging around Baltimore tonight perhaps you’d be keen on stepping over to the Hexagon for night two of the Aural States fest.  This is the dance night and features Cex (Rjyan Kidwell), Craig Sopo, and Garret McIndoe.  Down in DC is the last night of the Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 Club as well as the infamous Lykke Li performing at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue.  Also in DC are Telograph, Cobra Collective, American Bang, and Triggers at the Rock and Roll Hotel.  Up north in Philly the 941 Theater has a great show with The Bye Byes, The Surefire Broadcast, and BC Camplight.  Finally if you don’t mind a bit of travel you could head up to Swarthmore College, PA to take in Passion Pit and Cale Parks.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – January 30, 2009

Tonight if you are in Baltimore you should n0t be anywhere but our friends Aural States’ One Year Anniversary Festival at Sonar.  The line up includes a slew of stellar local acts including Arbouretum, Wye Oak, Lo Moda, Small Sur, Sri Aurobindo, Andy Abelow, Imperial China, and Caverns, Pleasant Livers, CANNOT BE STOPPED, Hollywood, Title Tracks (John Davis from Q and Not U/Georgie James).  If you are not in Charm City and in DC instead then perhaps you’d like to check in on the next saga of Thievery Corporation in their week long take over of the 9:30 Club.  If you’re up in Philly then you’re probably aching to see Lykke Li at the First Unitarian Church with Wildbirds & Peacedrums.  If you can’t manage to swing that one, you’re in luck because there’s another fab show over at Johnny Brenda’s featuring Annuals, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and What Laura Says.  Enjoy!

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.
