New Music: Japanese Cartoon – Lupe Fiasco’s Britrock Band?

trans-pokemonscylla

Here comes Japanese Cartoon – aka what Lupe Fiasco likes to do with some free studio time.  Perhaps donning a fake British accent and attitude, Mr. Fiasco has put together a fun couple of tracks.  Apparently there’s been a mix up and JC is claiming that Lupe isn’t in fact the lead singer, but I’m not buying that story just yet.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – Friday December 5, 2008

Tonight I am only concerned with the 9:30 Club in DC and Nada Surf, The Jealous Girlfriends, and The Delta Spirit.  If I had to focus on something else though I might have to trek on over to the University Of Maryland, College Park where Lupe Fiasco is playing it cool.  Or perhaps if I was in Philly I’d stomp on over to the Fire and check Illinois, Orbit To Leslie, and Cicadian Rhythms.  But Nada Surf is the main event and that’s all I’m concerned with.

The Run Down – Saturday August 9, 2008

Today is the first day of the famous Virgin Fest at Pimlico Race Track here in Baltimore. Nothing better than a hot August day in a venue with no shade to enjoy Lupe Fiasco, Wilco, Cat Power, Citizen Cope, Duffy, KT Tunstall, Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Jack Johnson, The Swell Season, Gogol Bordello, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and Chuck Berry and the Silver Beats. If you want to enjoy yourself in a less sweaty, more cozy atmosphere, then perhaps the Metro Gallery will do the trick with Panda Riot, Arms and Sleepers, and Avocado Happy Hour.   Also in Baltimore at 2460 St. Paul it’s Jana Hunter, Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez (CD Release), Strohmeier, and Small Sur (CD Release).  In Virginia is day two of the These United States event at Iota with The Apparitions and our good friends Bellman Barker. In Philly Johnny Brenda’s has Baltimore’s Beach House, Cass McCombs, and Tickley Feather while the Trocadero has Little Brother, Writtenhouse, Hustle Simmons, and DJ Ashkun. Also in Philly are The New Pornographers who take over the Electric Factory with Andrew Bird. Enjoy! Photo by Joshua J. Smelser

The Run Down – Thursday January 31, 2008

The last day of January has some quality shows for you. Here in Baltimore the Ottobar is hosting Judd & Maggie’s CD release party with performances by Steve Hefter and Friends of Friends, Carousel Rogues, and Harrison Hudson. In Philly you can catch Lupe Fiasco at the Fillmore or head on over to the Khyber to see C Rayz Walz, Reef The Lost Cauze, Viro the Virus, and more. In VA, Thao with The Get Down Stay Down is having their CD release at IOTA with David Shultz and the Skyline. In DC the Red and the Black has Ilad, with Square Trio and Sun Committee. Finally at DC9 be sure to catch Zulu Pearls. Many of you were probably expecting to see Robbers On High Street, but a band member had to be taken to the hospital. Hopefully everything is okay. Zulu Pearls is still a fantastic band, so keep your plans intact for DC9 (it’s only $5).

The Run Down – Wednesday January 30, 2008

While I may be a bit out of sorts today, that doesn’t stop the good shows going on tonight. The 9:30 club has everyone’s favorite MC, Lupe Fiasco lyrically tear the roof down. There’s a solid show at the Black Cat with DC’s Greenland, Len Bias (the band, not the deceased b-baller), and More Humans. Finally here in Baltimore, everyone should go check out Among Wolves, Sissy Jupe, and The Herd Of Main St. at the website –> buy
