Tonight in DC there’s good sounds all around town. The Red and the Black have a new favorite of mine, Hooray For Earth along with No Compromise. The Black Cat has the Radar Brothers and Aerialist while DC9 has The Childballads, The King Left, and Howlies. Over in Fredericksburg, VA the Third Floor has a stellar night of music with Ra Ra Riot, Princeton, and Carlos, I’m Pregnant. Up north in Philly the Fillmore at the TLA has Scott Weiland, The Airborne Toxic Event, and The Ting Tings while the North Star Bar is where it’s at with Manchester Orchestra, Kevin Devine, Dead Confederate, and All Get Out perform. Tonight in DC there’s a load of solid shows for you to check out. Darker My Love is at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Strange Boys and Love Is All while Loretta Lynn and Justin Jones play a recently announced show at the 9:30 Club. Across the way in Arlington, VA Iota has a super one with The Modern Skirts and The Old Ceremony. Up north in Philadelphia there’s also a plethora of great shows to see. The Fire has National Eye, The Armchairs, Toy Soldiers, and Tavo Carbone while the Trocadero has Mercury Rev and Dean & Britta. Also the Fillmore at the TLA has an amazing event with The Walkmen, Beach House, and The Subjects while Bang Camaro and Hooray For Earth play the North Star Bar. Finally don’t forget that there’s a stellar show at Johnny Brenda’s with Jukebox the Ghost, Papertrigger, and Exit Clov. Enjoy!

In January of 2009 Dopamine Records is set to re-release Boston quartet Hooray For Earth’s debut S/T album. I’ve been listening to this album fairly frequently for the last month or so and have had a hard time pinning them down. Imagine if Sean Lennon went hardcore and you might be tiptoeing close to their high wire sound. Hooray For Earth actually remind me a lot of Baltimore’s Avec. While Avec combine Mates Of State pop with Helmet style rock, Hooray For Earth take more Melvins/Nirvana loudness and counter it with Beatles era pop. Their my band of the week to let my angst out to, but singing along rather than screaming.

There’s a bunch of sweet shows tonight and one great one on Monday worth mentioning. Tonight down south in DC the Foreign Exchange and Mark De Clive-Lowe play the Black Cat while a great new band for me, Hooray For Earth plays the Velvet Lounge with Kidnapkin. Up north in Philly Sweden’s Fredrik play the Khyber (don’t miss it!) while Kings Of Leon, We Are Scientists, and The Whigs play the Electric Factory.
