The Run Down – February 13, 2009

Every body’s day of unluck has arrived full of black cats, shattered mirrors, and sidewalks full of ladders to walk under.  How about avoiding all that crap and go to some shows?  There’s a ton!  First here in Baltimore the Metro Gallery has The Snowmen, Cortez Cortez, and Inflatable Hair (1/2 of Impossible Hair) while the Zodiac gets everyone ready for Valentine’s Day with Beach House, The Creepers, and Dodgers.  If you want something with a bit more bounce head over to Sonar to see Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, DJ P-Funk, and Busy Bee.  If you want to do some good, how about heading over to the Senator for the Save The Senator benefit show featuring Wye Oak, Jana Hunter, The John Hardy Boys, US Royalty, Payola Reserve, and more.  Also down in Annapolis The Whiskey has Baltimore’s Telesma.  Down in DC there’s Imperial China and New Rock Church Of Fire at the Rock and Roll Hotel while Jason Mraz and Ben Folds play the Smith Center.  Up north in Philly the Northern Liberties Festival continues at the Fire with Drink Up Buttercup (awesome), Orbit To Leslie (also awesome), The Lisps (super awesome), Jotto (pretty rad), Hezekiah Jones (so awesome even my mom likes ‘em), and Spinning Leaves (also pretty friggin rad).  That’s an awesomely rad show!  Good luck!

The Run Down – December 12, 2008

Tonight Baltimore is sporting some fine musical events and we couldn’t be happier.  Over at the Gspot Ted Leo and Cale Parks perform.  Not sure if this is sold out (the DC and Philly shows are) but it most likely will (or it already is).  If you’re looking for a smaller but still solid show around town then look no further than the Sidebar who has the Asteroid #4 performing.  For a lighter sound then head over to the Talking Head to see Radar Brothers, E. Joseph, and the Payola Reserve.  If you’re in the mood for something of everything then head over to the Nowarehouse to se Pete Yorko and the One Man Band, Mischief Brew, The Mandroids, and Sacri-fi.  DC has a sweet show tonight at the Rock and Roll Hotel with the ever-fantastic Jukebox The Ghost, The Postelles, and Pretty & Nice.  There’s also a bag of super shows filling up Philly tonight.   The Fire has an acoustical flavored show featuring Hezekiah Jones, Cotton Jones, Oud Blues, The Feverfew, and Joseph Patrick Scott.  Finally don’t forget that My Brightest Diamond and Clare & The Reasons play the First Unitarian Church while House Of Fire play the North Star Bar, and last but not least the legendary Neil Young, Wilco, and Everest make some magic happen at the Wachovia Spectrum..

Mr. Jones

So the folk scene is HIGHLY SATURATED. I often tire of actually. So what does it mean when a folk album passes through my hands that I end up enjoying? It means it’s damn good. Why? There’s personality, charm, pain and sorrow leaking out of every crack of the album. Every track doesn’t hit me the same way, but on the whole Hezekiah Says You’re A-OK by Hezekiah Jones comes together well with no strings attached. No booming choruses, no xylophones and tubas. Just a guitar, some choice melodies and vocals, and the occasional spice of an instrument. Being from the Philadelphia region, you can find Hezekiah Jones playing up and down the east coast frequently. Check their myspace for current dates.

The Run Down – Saturday January 5, 2008

Wow. That’s all I can say about the shows going on tonight. At the Lo-Fi in Baltimore a serious rock and roll show is happening. There is no doubt that Le Rug, Pianowire, Screaming Females, and Abiku will tear it down. Also in B-more, the Talking Head plays host to Jason Dove & The Magic Whip, Prabir & The Substitutes, Frenemies, and Labianca. Up in Philly there are two great shows. At the North Star Bar, The What Monsters play along with Infinica, Falkonr, and Triggers. Finally at the Fire there is an amazing line up of bands including Drink Up Buttercup, Cheers Elephant, Ezra Furman, Hezekiah Jones, and Small Flightless Birds. Wow.
