My love for the Harlem Shakes goes way back to their demo days. “Strictly Game” is perhaps one of my favorite tracks off their debut LP Technicolor Health (though the whole thing is ace). On their new remix Oklahoma City’s Kids At The Bar slice and dice this track to the max until you’d swear it was born on the dance floor. I’m diggin’ it…perhaps because I’m in one of those dancy moods today…or perhaps because even just a slice of the Harlem Shakes is nice. Check it:
And in more Harlem Shakes related news, their guitarist Todd Goldstein has his solo project Arms (who I’ve also been a fan of since the demo days) and the super-fantastic debut album Kids Aflame is finally seeing a release in the US on October 27th via Gigantic Music. The album will feature a few new bonus tracks. If you slept on Mr. Goldstein previously, now’s your chance to redeem yourself and GET THIS ALBUM. Take a listen to the title track:
From the sugar sweet album Technicolor Health, Harlem Shakes now bring us the first video for one of my favorite tracks, “Strictly Game”. The video is full of whimsical semi still photographs. Check it:
Tonight has a bum rush of shows and I’m here to talk about some of them. Here in Baltimore the Zodiac has EAR PWR, Adventure, Dinowalrus, and Bachelor Of The Arts. Should be sweet. Also the hip hop poet himself, Common will be rolling into Sonar with Saleem and the Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick opening. Rams Head Live has one of my (and probably everyone else’s) favorites in Modest Mouse performing. Also don’t forget that Eureka Birds are playing/recording a micro show at 2603 N. Charles St. Space will be limited. Down in DC Hoots and Hellmouth perform at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Good Old War while Nancy plays the Red and the Black with Jay Paslay. The 9:30 Club is the place to be though with Bell X1 and another one of my favorites, Harlem Shakes opening. Finally up in Philadelphia Bishop Allen rock the First Unitarian Church while Langhorne SLim, The Bones Royal, and Red Collar play Johnny Brenda’s. Enjoy!
As I might have mentioned in the past I’ve been a fan of Harlem Shakes for a while now. The great Sixeyes blog posted some rough demos before their EP Burning Birthdays was released and I fell in love with the tracks. Then there was a lull, but lucky for the world guitarist/singer Todd Goldstein put his heart into his solo effort Arms. Now Harlem Shakes are back from their travels and schools with a new album due out on March 24th called Technicolor Health and it sounds pretty promising. They got together with Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen, Passion Pit, White Rabbits) and set off to record this thing and it looks like they’ve expanded their sound quite a bit from the EP. The first single “Strictly Game” shows their exploration off instantly with a blustering electro fuzzy bass then flows into a masterful song featuring the whole band harmonizing and a successful marriage of electronic elements and their tight indie rock sound. Another interesting note on the album is “Sunlight” which is a completely redone version of an early demo song I knew to be “A Night”. That was my favorite Shakes song from the past and this version is kick ass. Harlem Shakes are currently on the mega-super-sweet tour with Born Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club – check their myspace for the dates.
Tonight in Baltimore the place to be is the Ottobar who has Matt & Kim, Hollywood Holt, and Sick Weapons. Be there. If you’re down south in DC you have a few options for shows. Ben Kweller, The Watson Twins, and Jones St. Station are at the 9:30 Club while …And You Will Know Us by the Trail Of Dead, Funeral Party, and Midnight Masses will take on the Rock and Roll Hotel. Also in DC is the fantastic line up of Tokyo Police Club, Born Ruffians, and Harlem Shakes at the Black Cat – amazing! Over the hills in Fredericksburg, Virginia don’t miss a great show at the Third Floor with Pomegranates. Finally up north in Philly The Dig, Dave Smallen, The Defog, True Womanhood, and Farewell Republic play the Khyber and The Swirlies, Arc In Round, and Gregory & The Hawk play Johnny Brenda’s. Enjoy!
