New Black Lips featuring Wu’s GZA – “The Drop I Hold”

I’ll be honest with you folks – I’m not the biggest fan of Hotlanta’s Black Lips.  I know they get a lot of praise n all but they never quite hit it off with my ears.  But when the Wu’s GZA gets involved I TAKE NOTICE.  Yeah I’m one of those people that likes to care a spare copy of Liquid Swords in my book bag JUST IN CASE.  So when I heard GZA was appearing on the Black Lips track “The Drop I Hold” I was intrigued and took it all in (it’s on a new Itunes EP).   Am I a converted Black Lips fan now?  Nope.

There is one Black Lips track I still play every now and then though…but that’s mainly because Diplo kicks some serious ass.

The Run Down – New Years Eve 2009!!

Most likely you already you already have plans for this night of all nights, but just in case….here’s a small list of parties going on at the area’s clubs.  Here in Baltimore the big ticket is Wu-Years Eve at Sonar featuring Method Man, Rza, Gza, Ghostface, Raekwon, Masta Killa, U-God, Cappadonna and Inspecta Deck.  If you don’t like that sound just wall two steps over to Sonar’s club stage to check the Taxlo Dance Party with Sri Aurobindo, Simon Phoenix, Cullen Stalin, Chris O, and Emily Rabbit.  If that doesn’t float your boat then travel over to Sonar’s VIP lounge to see Saleem & The Music Lovers, Wendel Patrick, Ogun, Brown Fish, Skarr Akbar, Kage, and DJ P-Funk.  Wow is right!  Three shows in one place is pretty amazing.   Also in Baltimore is a grand event at the Ottobar.  Gilded Lilly Burlesque and the American Music Jamboree present a night of dance and music featuring The Country Devils, Whale Show, Labianca, Cold Cold Heartbreakers and more.  Also in town is a great party at the Wind Up Space with DLake and Napspace and another celebration over at the Metro Gallery with Snacks, AK Slaughter, Baby Venom, and The Agrarians.

In DC there are also an abundance of quality NYE shows.  The 9:30 Club has Robert Randolph and the Family Band and Justin Jones and The Driving Rain.  A complimentary champagne toast included!  The Black Cat has a NYE Ball with Peaches O’Dell and Her Orchestra, Tony Anthony and his Malvivants plus DJ Mark Zimin on the backstage.  The Rock and Roll Hotel has a night of rock and DJing going on with Pash, Loderunner, US Royalty, Chris Burns (Disco City), Austin (Garutachi), AutoRock (Mass Appeal), Gavin Holland (Nouveau Riche), Cale (Brightest Young Things), and an Exactly DJ Set (Adrian & Cole w/Jesse Bishop as MC).  Also don’t forget about DC9 who has a New Years edition of their Liberation Dance Party.

In Virginia there happens to be a couple of noteworthy shows to bring in the new year as well.  In Arlington, Iota kicks the night into gear with Last Train Home and the Justin Trawick Group.  In Fredericksburg The Third Floor has Rocky’s Revival, The Red Light Effect, and Tereu Tereu.

If you’re heading up north to Philly for the final countdown, then keep these events in mind.  The Fire has Cowmuddy while the Electric Factory has Gogol Bordello.  The Khyber has No Tight Pants, Dj Lexx, DJ R’N'G, Moshpit Rainbow, DJ Vertigo, Headbanger, DJ Jesse Merlin, and Stakeout.  Spend New Years Eve with Dada at the North Star Bar (they’ll be performing a three hour set) or check out Steve Bloodbath at the M Room.  It’s going to be pure fun at the Fillmore at the TLA with They Might Be Giants and Corn Mo.  Finally Johnny Brenda’s has a nice year closer show with Pattern Is Movement and The Mural and The Mint.

Holy crap!  That’s some serious partying.  Enjoy!  Have a happy new year!!

Tonight in Baltimore Ram’s Head Live has the legendary Wu-tang member Gza/Genius performing while up in Philly World Cafe Live has Juliana Hatfield and Hayden kicking it.  I’m afraid it’s all quiet after that.  Unless you can tell me of a few.  Photo by Andrew Kieschnick

GZA Gives Us The Tools

On August 19th Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA/Genius released his fifth solo album, Pro Tools.  I first fell into GZA way back when while flipping through countless hip hop albums at my local record shop before settling on the infamous Liquid Swords.  If you like hip hop and don’t have that album, you need to stop whatever you are doing and run to the record shop.  GO!  Okay back to Pro Tools.  After Liquid Swords GZA has put out a stretch of albums that don’t quite top the beauty he created on the first, but they all are still pretty great in their own right.  That continues with Pro Tools.  GZA has a flow that eases into your mind like you’re sitting around some urban campfire listening to him spout tales of his life and dreams.  That’s the main reason his albums are so compelling.  It also doesn’t hurt that he brought in some top notch producers like Arabian Prince or most notably RZA (whose two tracks are my faves off this one).  Enjoy and make sure to check out GZA’s tour dates after the jump.

The Run Down – Thursday January 10 ,2008

As the week goes on, the shows keep getting better and better. If you’re in Philly you might have a tough decision on what show to attend. It will probably come down to what mood you’re in. If you missed Wu-Tang in Baltimore last night, you can check them out tonight at the Trocadero. Or if you fancy indie pop rock, there’s the dynamite line-up of New Motels, Long Walk Home, The Bye Byes, and Swivel Chairs at the Khyber. Or perhaps you crave the alt-blues-folk-rock genre. In that case head on down to the Ottobar in Baltimore to check out the MacGregor Burns Band playing with Mason Dixon and Good Guise.
