As you may know Denton, Texas’ Fishboy very dear to me. Their twee rock opera Albatross: How We Failed To Save The Lone Star State With The Power Of Rock And Roll was an epic smile maker around these parts and had a title that was a hand cramp waiting to happen. Judging from the mass amount of articles I’ve seen, it seems the blogworld agrees. Front-man Eric Michener decided to seriously mix it up for his next release, the Nom EP. He wanted a new sound – so much so he recorded vocals and scratch acoustic guitars then passed the tracks onto another local Denton band The Om Nom Noms. The guitar track was deleted and the ONN were given a blank slate with which to work their magic. They went to town and produced quite an extraordinary recording completely redesigning the face of each song, yet still they have the air of Fishboy. It’s nice when a concept like this works out so well…
So now my only question is how will these songs sound live when the original Fishboy band hits the road. Only one way to find out I guess (check the dates after the jump)

Sunday morning again…the weekend is slowly slipping away…Monday looms ahead. Perhaps Fishboy’s new song “Cobra Cobra” will cheer you up. It’s a light-hearted song speaking of promise, busyness, eventually growing up, and a cobra that has legs. I found out about Fishboy’s new EP via You Ain’t No Picasso the other day and couldn’t be happier. Fishboy just have a way to make me smile. Perhaps because they remind me of old Dead Milkmen sometimes or perhaps because they made a concept album featuring the ghost of Buddy Holly as one of the main characters. The release is called the Nom EP because they recorded the vocals then passed the tracks along to another Denton band, The Om Nom Noms for the backing music. You can stream some more fab tracks at their Muxtape page, but here’s “Cobra Cobra”.

It’s nice to come across a band that genuinely makes you laugh and enjoy life. Fishboy does that and more. Upon first listen, Fishboy reminds me of bands like The Dead Milkmen and old Flaming Lips. Then after a coupla more listens I was completely sucked into the crazy world that is Fishboy. I guess you could call it Fantasy/Comedy/Lo-Fi/Rock/Other/Thing music. Out of the musical mixing pot that is Denton, Texas, Fishboy, aka Eric Michener, and his band of merry musicians(John Clardy, Justin Lloyd, Adam Avramescu) have just set out on a Midwest to West tour promoting their album, Albatross: How We Failed To Save The Lone Star State With The Power Of Rock And Roll. Released on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, Eric says it’s “a rock opera about how myself, the band, and the ghost of Buddy Holly attempt to save Texas by going on a tour/crime spree in order to perform all 8,030 of the songs I’ve written in my sleep since I was in the womb.” I guess that says it all.
