When New York’s synth funk techno master musician Eliot Lipp gets his lasers around the psych-dream-crazy-coolness of Daedelus‘ “LA Nocturn” it’s almost guaranteed to be great. Guess what? I was right! Take a listen:

On January 29th, electronic groove czar Eliot Lipp is set to release his 6th album in five years, Peace Love Weed 3D. “Beamrider” is the lead single from the album and this track is…umm…pretty friggin nice. “Beamrider” has Lipp swimming in saturated synths while stitching together a futuristic lowrider beat. It feels perfect while lounging with the lights dimmed or perhaps late night driving through a cold metropolis.

Tonight’s a crazy hopping night for shows in the Baltimore area. Over at the Ottobar Tokyo Police Club headlines with The Whigs and The Coast opening. Down at the Hexagon get some DJ action with Eliot Lipp, Daedelus, and Matthew Diamond. The Old 97’s play Sonar with Caleb Stine and the Brakemen and Desert Boys opening. If you’re in Fells Point be sure to swing by Fletcher’s to catch Wild Sweet Orange, New Age Outlaws, Armed Elephant, and Doug Ahern Band. Up at the Recher Theatre Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos play with Dear and the Headlights and Motion City Soundtrack. Finally if you’re down in DC don’t miss The Kooks playing the 9:30 club with Illinois.

Eliot Lipp is not your average DJ. There’s no flash. There’s no showboating of ’skills’. There’s just smooth electronic funk. Maybe it has something to do with him growing up in Tacoma, Washington. All that rain washed away the sparkle, but fueled the soul in him. If you’re looking to sit back and write, draw, or stare into space tonight, then do yourself a favor and check Eliot Lipp.

Blu and Exile are bringing back LA hip hop with his recent album Below The Heavens. That’s a bold statement, but sometimes we need bold statements. While the indie rock side of my brain is fed often, it’s rare that I come across some hip hop these days that truly fills me up. Maybe that’s just the mood I’m in right now. So be it. In the tradition of the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blu and DJ, Exile(who you may remember from Emanon) have put out a solid hip hop album, with good production and lyrics that could stand alone and still be entertaining. What appeals to me about Blu is that the truth really comes across in his lyrics. Sometimes some MCs don’t present themselves as believable, but Blu’s rhymes about life paint a detailed picture of who he is and what he’s thinking.
