New Department Of Eagles Video -”No One Does It Like You”

I had almost forgotten how wonderful an album In Ear Park was…what with all the great music coming out this year sometimes things can fade.  Happy day for us that Department Of Eagles recently unveiled their new video for “No One Does It Like You” at MOMA the other day to help me re-realize it’s greatness.  What can I say about it?  The art of war.  Death.  Life.  Bedroom sheet ghosts.  Amputations.  Enjoy!

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

Department Of Eagles On Daytrotter

My new favorite band Department Of Eagles have recently recorded a session over on Daytrotter.  The bonus is that two of the songs are brand spankin’ new.  Here’s my favorite:

Go listen to the rest of it here and be sure to read the info on each song (it’s pretty insightful).

Department Of Eagles Video on Pitchfork TV & Some Sweet New Live Songs

Department Of Eagles seem to be catching on pretty quickly, which they most certainly deserve.  Pitchfork TV recently recorded a live performance of DOE performing “In Ear Park” and “No One Does It Like You” on a Manhattan rooftop.  Take a look at “In Ear Park”:

As if that wasn’t cool enough, I Guess I’m Floating has two brand spanking new songs by DOE that they performed live on last Monday’s Bell House Show.  Got get ‘em here.

Video – Department Of Eagles Live On Conan

As you may know I’ve been listening to Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park a bit too much lately (check the review here).  It’s starting to become unhealthy.  So yesterday I said enough is enough and decided to ween myself away from this gorgeous album.  Of course then Dan Rossen and friends go on Conan the other night and give a jaw dropping performance of “No One Does It Like You”.  I’m off the wagon again.  Take a look for yourself (thanks to You Ain’t No Picasso for the vid).

Also if you want to seriously laugh your ass off, check out the interview with Louis C.K. also on Conan the other night.  You can watch it here on videogum.

Department Of Eagles

I don’t think there’s an album out right now that I’m completely in love with more than Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park (out October 7th on 4AD).  Department Of Eagles is comprised of Daniel Rossen from Grizzly Bear, his friend Fred Nicolaus, and some help from Grizzly Bear-mates Chris Taylor and Chris Bear.  So you can imagine there’s somewhat of a similar sound to Grizzly Bear.  Department Of Eagles actually existed before Grizzly Bear, and In Ear Park has taken about four years to come together.  In my opinion, this album has it all -  slow McCartney like ballads with sweeps of galaxy sized sounds crashing over and under them.  Pretty powerful and moving stuff indeed.  Rossen describes it well:

“In Ear Park has been in the making in one form or another for several years now, on and off tour and after work.  A lot of these songs felt way too personal to bring to Grizzly Bear — there’s a lot of childhood nostalgia and an emphasis on more concise songwriting.  Fred and I had license to try some things that I could never get away with otherwise, but we still went for the lushness and attention to sonic detail that Chris and I always want out of a recording.  I’m excited.”

Me too.
