You Should Go: Deleted Scenes, Drink Up Buttercup, Soft Cat, and Person Parcel at the Talking Head

poster_web

This Friday (tomorrow) features a show that I thought I’d highlight here in Baltimore.  The Talking Head will host Baltimore/DC band Deleted Scenes, Philly’s Drink Up Buttercup,  Baltimore/Texas band Soft Cat, and Baltimore’s Person Parcel.

Deleted Scenes is a local band that we have pumped up numerous times on the blog.  They’re good.  Trust me.  Check out our review of their debut album Birdseed Shirt here.  Here’s one of my favorites off of it:

If you haven’t heard/seen Philadelphia’s Drink Up Buttercup by now then frankly, you’re missing out big time.  I saw them a ways back at Iota and they simply killed it.  If you like inspiring trashcan smashing, floor stomping magical mystery tour music then Drink Up Buttercup is for you.  This is one band you have to see live.  The recordings, while good, don’t do them justice.  Speaking of recordings Drink Up Buttercup has just signed with Yep Roc and has released a free digital single for “Even Think” with a b side of an alternate version of “Heavy Hand”.  Go to Yep Rec for the DL.  If you like vinyl they will be releasing it on wax as well and it features a remix from Cale Parks and a cover of the Buzzcock’s “Why Can’t I Touch It”.  Nice.  Look for a full length next year.  Listen and see more PP posts about here and here.   Here’s their ultimate sing a long:

Soft Cat is newish Baltimore band that I have come to love.  Headed by Neil of Texas’ Talking Tiger Mountain and featuring Andy Abelow, members of Weekends, and whoever else stops by, Soft Cat play experimental folk music with subtle emotion and power.  The closest sound I can think of is The Antlers.  Check our previous post on them here.  Meanwhile here’s a track that still hasn’t left my daily rotation:

Person Parcel is band I know little of, but judging from the tracks on their myspace they seem to produce some solid folk music.  Take a listen.

The show starts at 8pm.  It’s 8 bucks and is all ages.  Enjoy!

Remix: AutoRock takes on Deleted Scenes’ “Ithaca”

dsremixart

AutoRock has been hosting Mass Appeal over at DC’s Rock and Roll Hotel for a while now so I was pretty excited when he sent his new remix of area band Deleted Scenes and their track “Ithaca”.  I never imagined this band being remixed so it’s nice to hear a swirling disco version of the track.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – February 28, 2009

Time to celebrate the last day of February!!!  Here’s my suggestions…DC9 in DC is having their 5 Year Anniversary party and are featuring performances from Jukebox The Ghost and J-Roddy Walston and The Business.  Should be dynamite!  Also in DC are Benjy Ferree, Tim Fite, and Laughing Man.  They play the Black Cat.  The Velvet Lounge has a good one with Deleted Scenes, Batata Doce (ex Rock*A*Teens), and Mittenfields while Dan Aurebach takes down the 9:30 Club.  Hacienda and Those Darlins open for him.  Up in Philly classic hip hop is in town with the Black Sheep at the Khyber.  Zilla Rocca opens.  Finally don’t forget that Thievery Corporation play the Electric Factory and Tapes ‘n Tapes, Wild Light and The Subjects continue their tour through the area making a stop at Johnny Brenda’s.  Enjoy!

The Run Down – February 20, 2009

Tonight in Baltimore there are some super sweet shows that deserve to be seen, heard, and enjoyed.  Sonar has a Taxlo event with the fantabulous Treasure Fingers, Cullen Stalin, Simon Phoenix, Blaqstarr and Juiceboxxx.  If that isn’t up your alley perhaps the Wind Up Space has what you’re looking for with Celebration, Lone Wolf, and Ami Dang.  If you want to go the ‘popular’ route then look no further than Rams Head Live and Fountains Of Wayne.  Down in DC the Velvet Lounge has some Baltimore bands performing tonight.  Don’t miss Screen Vinyl Image, Payola Reserve, SikSik Nation, and Nerd Parade.  Should be decent.  Philly’s no slouch tonight either.  La Strada and Deleted Scenes play the Fire while Kaiser Cartel, Igor’s Egg, and Grammar Debate play the Tin Angel.  Over at the Khyber the North Lawrence Midnight Singers take the stage along with The Rosewood Thieves and The MLM’s.  Also up north are the Sounds Of Kaleidescope who play Johnny Brenda’s along with Asteroid #4 and Like A Fox.  Finally Don’t miss out on M. Ward and Vivian Girls at the Trocadero.

The Run Down – January 24, 2009

Wow, Baltimore has an amazing Saturday lined up for the picking.  Joe Squared has a solid show with local band Kadman, A Cat Called Cricket, and Mittenfields.  Metro Gallery has the recently reviewed Deleted Scenes along with Lush Farm and Vnny Vegas.  The Ottobar has some good hip hop from Soul Cannon and Young Sir Jim.  Also don’t forget that one of our favorite singer/songwriters from the area, Abby Mott, is playing a show at El Rancho Grande.  DC has a few notable events as well.  Via Audio and Modern Skirts play the Rock and Roll Hotel while Yo! Majesty, Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart, Flex Matthews, and DJ Vroc play the Black Cat.  Also the Red and the Black have the Dig, Danni Rosner, House Of Echo, and Collider.  Finally up north in Philly The Brakes play a show at The Blinkin Lincoln.

New Music: Deleted Scenes “Birdseed Shirt”

From the rain soaked sidewalks of Baltimore to the flickering streetlights of DC, Deleted Scenes have been the talk as of late with their debut album Birdseed Shirt.   When I first started this lil’ blog, Deleted Scenes were one of the first area bands I caught on to.  Their EP was full of angular pop rock that won me over easily.  Now when I listen to the EP compared to Birdseed Shirt, I see how far the band has come.  The range of emotions – the strength of anger, the saturation of joy – pour out of this new bundle of songs.  “Take My Life” is a grand example of this – starting off soft and sweet even though the lyrics talk of suicide (the sound almost beckons comparisons to Ra Ra Riot or Band Of Horses), but as it progresses the track cranks to a new height with a chorus I simply love to sing along with.  Another highlight for me is “City That Never Wakes Up”.   Here’s a song built on a complex rhythm and a chanting chorus that ebbs and flows then sparkles at the end.  It’s like a walk through a midnight drenched city.  So before I heard this album I was already on the Deleted Scenes bandwagon, but after listening to Birdseed Shirt over and over, I’m the guy on top of the wagon singing along loudly.
