Brooklyn band Bear Hands is about to release a new single “What A Drag” in February, but you can download it free via their website for the next month. They bring back the same energetic rocknroll sound some how creating a heavenly blend of Modest Mouse and The Pixies whilst bringing in some new found synths to spice it all up. “What A Drag” has me even more pumped about this band. I’m still wondering where the album’s at though…
Next week on August 4th Cale Parks, drummer for White Williams and Aloha, will release his third solo work, the EP To Swift Mars via Polyvinyl. Parks picks up right where he left off from last years Sparklace continuing to produce lavish well written songs fused with out of the ordinary drum arrangements and a host of obscure sounds flying around them. However on To Swift Mars Cale Parks has shifted to a smoother more melodic wall of sound method for his compositions. With Sparklace the drums were always in front and dominating the sounds with angular, sharp tones (similar to those of White Williams). On To Swift Mars Parks lets the other parts of the song simmer to the top and recall a close resemblance to the earlier work of Peter Gabriel and the like.
On August 19th Cale Parks and Lemonade take their tour to the Talking Head here in Baltimore and we happen to have a pair of tickets to give away. Email us, tweet us (DM please), or comment on this post to enter. The winner will be chosen by next Friday so get in on it!
Cale Parks just keeps on trucking these days. Touring with Passion Pit, Ted Leo, and Harlem Shakes for the last few months didn’t slow him down at all because now he’s set to release a new EP To Swift Mars on August 4th via Polyvinyl. A follow up to the wondrous Sparklace, To Swift Mars has Parks dabbling in a tad more immediately style of pop. He was nice enough to give us all a taste of the new sound with “One At A Time”. Take a listen:
Don’t miss Cale Parks when he comes to Baltimore on August 19th to the Talking Head supporting the release. Lemonade will also be performing. Stay tuned in the next few weeks…we might have something special up our sleeves for this EP.
Just in cased you missed this before, he also remixed Ra Ra Riot recently:
I love me some Cale Parks. Just when my admiration of the fab album of his, Sparklace, was starting to fade, he drops this bomb remix of Ra Ra Riot’s “Dying Is Fine”. If you need a stuttering bass drum beat to break you out of that endless stutter of a day – this should do the trick:
Cale Parks is gaining some serious props from me. His sophomore album Sparklace was a highlight for me last year and his other two bands, White Williams and Aloha, are not any slouches either. Now he’s dropped a new track, “Places We’ve Created”, just for his fans to gobble up. Parks blasts his church choir/beach boys reverbed out vocals throughout this beautiful mid-morning electronic spacetronic etherealtronic song. And what do we have here underneath all that glorious vocal layering and atmospheric sound – a Thriller-esque synth melody! Perfect.
Monday is usually a slow day for all us, ain’t it? Well on the show scene it’s the same. Luckily for the few of you itching to get out and hear some great live music, Baltimore is going to come through for you. The Ottobar has a pretty substantial show tonight with some hot indie acts – Passion Pit, Cale Parks, and Paper Route. This is one not to miss. If you want some legendary rock than look no further than the 9:30 Club in DC which has The Pretenders playing. American Bang is the opener. Enjoy!
If you’re hanging around Baltimore tonight perhaps you’d be keen on stepping over to the Hexagon for night two of the Aural States fest. This is the dance night and features Cex (Rjyan Kidwell), Craig Sopo, and Garret McIndoe. Down in DC is the last night of the Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 Club as well as the infamous Lykke Li performing at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue. Also in DC are Telograph, Cobra Collective, American Bang, and Triggers at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Up north in Philly the 941 Theater has a great show with The Bye Byes, The Surefire Broadcast, and BC Camplight. Finally if you don’t mind a bit of travel you could head up to Swarthmore College, PA to take in Passion Pit and Cale Parks. Enjoy!
Stereogum recently premiered NYC’s Cale Parks‘ new video for “Every Week Ends” off of his new album Sparklace – an album which I haven’t seemed to stop playing as of late. Take look/listen to it:
