The Run Down – March 13, 2009

While today might be unlucky for some, it’s definitely a lucky day for those of us in the Baltimore/DC area. Here in Baltimore there’s a show that is sure to be lights out over at the Ottobar. The Death Set roll in with Team Robespierre, Ninjasonik, Totally Michael, and Cerebral Ballzy opening. If you head down to DC you are in for a treat. Bishop Allen perform at the Black Cat with Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, Singsing & Marmar opening. Also at the Velvet Lounge Imperial China and Velodrome kick it. DC9 has a sweet one with Crystal Stilts and Woman while the ultimate goes down at the 9:30 Club with Modest Mouse and Kinky. Just around the bend in Arlington, Junior League play Iota with Six Day Bender. Finally up north in Philadelphia don’t forget about Bell X1 at the World Cafe Live. Enjoy!

The Run Down – March 12, 2009

Tonight has a bum rush of shows and I’m here to talk about some of them.  Here in Baltimore the Zodiac has EAR PWR, Adventure, Dinowalrus, and Bachelor Of The Arts.  Should be sweet.  Also the hip hop poet himself, Common will be rolling into Sonar with Saleem and the Music Lovers and Wendel Patrick opening.  Rams Head Live has one of my (and probably everyone else’s) favorites in Modest Mouse performing.  Also don’t forget that Eureka Birds are playing/recording a micro show at 2603 N. Charles St.  Space will be limited.  Down in DC Hoots and Hellmouth perform at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Good Old War while Nancy plays the Red and the Black with Jay Paslay.  The 9:30 Club is the place to be though with Bell X1 and another one of my favorites, Harlem Shakes opening.  Finally up in Philadelphia Bishop Allen rock the First Unitarian Church while Langhorne SLim, The Bones Royal, and Red Collar play Johnny Brenda’s.  Enjoy!

Video – Bishop Allen Perform New Song “Ancient Common Sense Of Things”

If you happened to catch Bishop Allen on their fall tour you might have heard this new track “Ancient Common Sense Of Things” performed that hopefully will be on their new album due out early next year via Dead Oceans.  This one reminds me of some of their monthly EP work a bit and definitely gets me pumped for their third album (which will also be followed by a full US and European tour beginning in March).  Enjoy the video shot at the Loft courtesy of emeseg:

Pretty sweet, huh?  Speaking of those EPs…I just had to go a dig up one of my favorites off the March edition:

The Run Down – Saturday November 1, 2008

While everyone might be slowly coming down from their sugar highs of last night, don’t let that stop you from checking out some superb local shows.  Here in Baltimore Sonar has Lyrics Born and Soul Cannon while Rams Head Live has Matisyahu and Flobots.  Down in DC the Rock and Roll Hotel has Murs and Kidz In The hall while the Black Cat has Bishop Allen, Dink Up Buttercup, and Electric Owls.  Right over the bridge in Arlington Iota blasts off with Deleted Scenes, Feral Kids, and Totally Snake.  Up north in Philly insanely popular and sometimes annoying Colplay take on the Wachovia Spectrum with Duffy while O’Death, Hoots & Hellmouth, and the Extraordinaires play Johnny Brenda’s.

mp3: Feral Kids – Never Told A Soul

mp3: Murs – The Pain

Bishop Allen Announce Fall Tour

Apparently Bishop Allen have been hiding away in Brooklyn recording a follow up LP (due out early 2009) to 2007’s The Broken String.  I enjoyed that album quite a bit, but it was lacking some of the charm of Charm School, perhaps because much of it was previously released with their string of 12 EPs the previous year (still amazed by that).  We all can find out how these songs are because they’ll be playing them on their newly announced tour.  Check the dates after the jump.  For now here’s one of my all time favorite songs…

The Run Down – Sunday May 18, 2008

There’s a great show at the Black Cat in DC tonight featuring some swell indie pop rock.  DC’s Deleted Scenes and The War On Drugs are opening up for one of my favorites, Bishop Allen.  If you can make it, it should be a great one.
