Beck and Friends Cover The Velvet Underground

beck22

Beck, ya gotta love ‘em.  Not only does he consistently produce strong album after strong album, he also enjoys being the innovator.  A new section has been added to his website called “Record Club” where he and a group of pals go into the studio to cover/record an entire classic album.  The first of which is the famous/infamous and essential The Velvet Underground & Nico.  There will more tunes popping up on his site from this recording session, but for now take an ear to “Sunday Morning”.

Also this isn’t the first time Beck went on a cover streak is it?

New Beck Video – “Replica”

It’s nice to get back to Modern Guilt every now and again.  Many forgot about Mr. Beck Hansen when they went to do those lists at the end of the year, but I always thought he really out did himself on this one.  “Replica” is his newest video and is perhaps the strangest of the album.  The rhythm stutters and scatters and the video echoes that with sudden black and white images of lights on a black background taken from some sort of studio set.  It’s a good one to let your mind wander to.

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

mp3: Nada Surf – The Fox

Buy Lucky (bonus track version)

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

mp3: Department Of Eagles – Herring Bone

Buy In Ear Park

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

mp3: The Walkmen – On The Water

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

mp3: Lykke Li – Little Bit

Buy Youth Novels

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

mp3: Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone

Buy Glasvegas

Those were the main highlights for me, but these albums also brought much joy to me throughout the year:

mp3: Eureka Birds – The Still Life

Friday (I’m A Remix)

So last week one of our readers informed me that a duck’s quack never echoes and no one knows why.  Well I did some googling and found out the real deal here.  Problem solved.

Recently I’ve been stumbling upon some truly wonderful blogs out there in the wilderness of the internet.  One of them is Wordsplosion! – a blog with a goal at pointing out the world’s grammatical errors.  If you want a laugh check them out here.  Continuing along the lines of blunders is PhotoshopDisasters.  If you ever want to be amused by the one legged surfer and such then this lil blog just might give you a chuckle.  So now my question to you is, what do you know?  Please let it all out.

A Simple Thank You

Well one year ago today we put up our first post here on Pasta Primavera, and I thought I should write a little somethin’ somethin’ to reflect back on our first year in the blogosphere.  Years ago I wanted to start a music blog, but I was working a certain crappy job that paid the bills, but didn’t leave much time for anything else.  So I was content on reading blogs like Gorilla Vs. Bear, I Guess I’m Floating, 3hive, Sixeyes, and So Much Silence for my music fix.  A little over 13 months ago I was fortunately able to ditch that job for a new one that let my mind (and time) ease up a bit, and that’s when I thought up the idea for the blog Pasta Primavera (the name has it’s origin from the Beastie Boys lyric ‘I’m all mixed up like pasta primavera‘ from What Comes Around off of Paul’s Boutique).  JB, Simon (evilhomer), and I joined forces just to share our thoughts on music with each other.  We really didn’t think anyone would find us and actually read what we were writing.  A few months into it we realized that people were actually reading so we started to take things a bit more seriously (well not that serious, but serious enough to say we’re serious).  We also began to take notice of the enormous and awesome music scene from the Baltimore/DC/Philly section of the east coast and made a goal to support it to the best of our abilities.  After that things were just a blast.  Tons of great music constantly passes through our ears and we try our best to pass it on to you.  Finally I just want to say thanks…to everyone who has spent more than a second perusing our site in search of that musical note to brighten your day.  Without you we’d just be some blog somewhere doing something.  With you, we’re Pasta Primavera.  Here’s to reminiscing….

Friday (I’m A Remix)

Nothing beats a good laugh so hopefully the above photo gave you a little chuckle.  The work was done by Scott Van Den Plas and Joe Van Wetering, but I scooped it off of Wooster Collective.  Have you checked them out before?  You should.  Nothing beats a good laugh (did I say that already?) or something that really challenges every day ideas.  Go check them out after you take a listen to these:

Beck For President

A while back I heard through the grapevine that the next Beck album was being produced by Danger Mouse.  I almost had a heart attack.  I’m a pretty big fan of Beck and Danger Mouse, so to hear they were joining forces was quite an elating moment.  Now that I hold Modern Guilt in my hands I can honestly say they didn’t disappoint.  Is anyone surprised that Beck did something different on Modern Guilt?  Of course not because he’s the master genre splicer.  What’s amazing about this most recent change is that Beck has crossed the bridge to creating deep emotional pieces as he did on Sea Change, but utilizing his trademark experimental sounds (Guero, The Information, Odelay, etc.).  Maybe this is the influence of Danger mouse.  DM shines all over this album with his patented rhythms, but also with his astounding ability to sense the mood and dynamic of each Beck song and mature it to another level.  I can’t say this is a classic Beck album yet, but I pretty sure that will come.  It hasn’t quite sank in yet.

New Beck, New Bowie Tribute Album, New Sunfold, & Ra Ra Riot Sign To Barsuk

So earlier this year we learned that Beck would have the infamous Danger Mouse to work with on his upcoming album. Many people (including myself) were crazily excited about this and anxiously waited to hear the first sounds from it. Well a couple of days ago Beck put up the track Chemtrails on his myspace and (thanks to JP’s Blog) we have it here for your listening pleasure. What’s it like you ask? Well it doesn’t sound like the usual Beck (surprised?). What it does sound like is friggin amazing.

In other news, following the success of Rapster RecordsExit Music compilation of Radiohead covers, they’ve announced a July 8th release of Life Beyond Mars: Bowie Covered. Here’s the track list:
01. Au Revoir Simone “Oh! You Pretty Things”
02. Heartbreak “Loving The Alien”
03. Kelley Polar “Magic Dance”
04. Leo Minor “Ashes To Ashes”
05. Carl Craig Presents Zoos of Berlin “Looking For Water”
06. Drew Brown “Sweet Thing”
07. Matthew Dear “Sound & Vision”
08. Susumu Yokota “Golden Years”
09. The Emperor Machine “Repetition”
10. Joakim & The Disco “A New Career In Town”
11. Richard Walters & Faultline “Be My Wife”
12. The Thing “Life On Mars”

Looks pretty good to me. If all the songs sound like the following Richard Walters & Faultline track, then we’ll all be living in Bowie bliss this Summer.

Do you remember that Wet Zoo EP that Annuals released a while back with a split with Kenny Florence’s Sunfold? Well this experimentation will be followed by the Terpsikhore Collective with a new release from Florence’s Sunfold on August 19th called Toy Tugboats. Here’s a refresher on them.
mp3: Sunfold – Between The Worlds

Finally, it was just announced that New York’s Ra Ra Riot has signed with Barsuk and will release their debut  full length on August 19th entitled The Rhumb Line.  The album was produced by Ryan Hadlock (the Gossip, Blonde Redhead, Islands) and new songs will be unveiled at some select festivals this summer (6/14, Denver, CO ,Westword Music Festival,  7/6, Milwaukee, WI, Summerfest,  7/26, Chicago, IL, Wicker Park Festival).
