New ARMS – Homelife (Demo) [mp3]

arms

I was pretty bummed out when I heard Harlem Shakes had disbanded.  I had been a long time fan and was also quite pleased with their debut LP Technicolor Health.  It’s not all a loss, because now Harlem Shakes’ guitarist Todd Goldstein can put all his effort towards his solo project in ARMS.  Back in 2008 Goldstein released Kids Aflame (read my words on it here) and it gained some hype around blogland…enough so that it’s now being re-released all over the US via Gigantic Records.  You should get it…it’s pretty swell.  Goldstein writes music that can be intimate folk one second then lush layered compositions the next then Dismemberment Plan like rock another time.  Solid all around.  He’s now back to writing new work.   Here’s his new demo that IGIF put up the other day.

Remix: Kids At The Bar takes on Harlem Shakes’ Strictly Game

kids at the bar

My love for the Harlem Shakes goes way back to their demo days.  “Strictly Game” is perhaps one of my favorite tracks off their debut LP Technicolor Health (though the whole thing is ace).  On their new remix Oklahoma City’s Kids At The Bar slice and dice this track to the max until you’d swear it was born on the dance floor.  I’m diggin’ it…perhaps because I’m in one of those dancy moods today…or perhaps because even just a slice of the Harlem Shakes is nice.  Check it:

And in more Harlem Shakes related news, their guitarist Todd Goldstein has his solo project Arms (who I’ve also been a fan of since the demo days) and the super-fantastic debut album Kids Aflame is finally seeing a release in the US on October 27th via Gigantic Music.  The album will feature a few new bonus tracks.  If you slept on Mr. Goldstein previously, now’s your chance to redeem yourself and GET THIS ALBUM.  Take a listen to the title track:

Pasta Primavera’s Favorite Albums of 2008

pasta

Before I start this thing off let me just say that I hate making lists.  I’m more of a pile person.  So you won’t see any numbers in the list of albums, rather my top five followed by my other favorites.  So here it goes.

Nada Surf has been a favorite band of mine since their first album (that was a ways back).  It’s amazing how much their sound has matured since then, and Lucky truly shows that they’re on top of their game.  It’s indie pop rock at it’s best.  And they’re killer live!

For a while there Department Of Eagles’ In Ear Park was all I was listening to.  Daniel Rossen and friends put together a gem of an album that took elements of Grizzly Bear and mashed them up with some McCartney-like pop.

The Walkmen’s You & Me took them from a band that I casually enjoyed from time to time, to a full on wonder that I try to set aside time to listen to when ever I can.  The Walkmen have always had an interesting sound that travels from a dark alleyway to an extravagant cathedral, but You & Me magnifies it even more and leaves me in awe.  It’s powerful.

Buy You & Me

It’s rare that an album or person lives up to the hype.  Lykke Li and her album Youth Novels does just that.  I fell in love with her sound quickly then pushed over the edge with her amazing energy that she puts into her live performances.   Despite the insane amount of remixes and radio plays, Youth Novels still hasn’t grown old to me and that’s also rare.

I can’t quite explain why I took to Glasvegas’ debut S/T album his year.  Perhaps it was the Beach Boys/Earth Angel/Smiths halo surrounding their black and white sound that enamored me.  It might not have a struck others the same way, but for me this album made an lasting impression.

Sound The Alarm For Arms

Years ago a great blog, Sixeyes, turned me onto The Harlem Shakes.  I became an instant fan and probably played their demos a little too much on my car stereo.  A couple of years later another great blog, I Guess I’m Floating, turned me onto Todd Goldstein, the guitarist of The Harlem Shakes, and his solo project Arms.  That EP from Arms also received a heavy dose of play in my car stereo (Tiger Tamer especially).  Now after many years of planning and recording, Mr. Goldstein has released his debut, Kids Aflame, and yes I’m probably playing it a bit too much in my car stereo.  You see Arms is a perfect blend of the energy and spirit of The Harlem Shakes with Todd’s unique voice and songwriting chops (that remind me somewhat of Andrew Bird actually).  Kids Aflame features the tracks from his EP, but completely reworked and orchestrated brilliantly, and of course the new tracks are deep, earthy songs that have you singing with glee in no time (the title track Kids Aflame is my favorite right now).  Now hopefully this little review sparks another listener to play these songs a bit too much in their car stereo…wait…I think I’m going to go for a drive…right now…  Photo by Oto Gillen
