When I first started Pasta Primavera Apostle Of Hustle’s National Anthem Of Nowhere was one of the first album reviews I did. I loved the large beats that consumed each song with Andrew Whiteman’s distinct blistering voice. Eats Darkness is their new one out on Arts & Crafts this month. It starts off with some random samples/noises which also appear later in the album. This sets the tone as Eats Darkness seems to have more of a concept feel to it. Of course the staples of Apostle Of Hustle’s sound are still there. Whiteman’s lyrics are as strong/strange as ever (“I drink rain and piss out acid” being one of my early favorite lines off the album) and Dean Stone’s drums are ever evolving and morphing to shadow each song’s mood in a different way each time. Eats Darkness over all theme is about going to the dark side like Skywalker only instead of saving the rebel alliance like Luke, Apostle Of Hustle go there to bathe in it for a while, let the creative juices flow, then come out brandishing one hell of an album.
What a way to start a week off! A new Apostle Of Hustle track! Andrew Whiteman of Broken Social Scene is back with his side project endeavor Apostle Of Hustle and appears to have the knack for creating odd little dark drum laden echoey vocal songs. National Anthem Of Nowhere was the jam a few years back, and “Perfect Fit”, while a bit on the industrial darknessy side, is a good indicator that the next release should be equally as powerful. Enjoy!

Also a few days ago Apostle of Hustle and Arts & Crafts put up a free download of a remix of ‘Chances Are’. The original is off of National Anthem of Nowhere which we’ve posted about in the past. The remix was done by Jim Eno. Many of you might recognize him as the drummer of Spoon. The remix is pretty nice. I’ve always found that AOH remixes very well, perhaps due to the fact that the original song structures are so rhythmically sound. Enjoy!

Did I mention I am completely into Apostle of Hustle. They just put out well crafted drum and melody driven songs. Well they are at again. This time covering Huey Lewis and the News? Why not: Apostle of Hustle – I Want A New Drug
In other AoH news, they just released a video for Cheap Like Sebastien. Umm…yeah…check it out here.
These guys grew on me. At first they became lost in the deep pit known as my music library. It wasn’t that I didn’t dig the music… I guess something else got in the way of me “really” listening to their album. If you continue reading this blog you will get the notion that I like music with euphoric beats. A good drummer/dj/pot-n-pan-player/sample-guy can make a band for me. A mediocre/bad one can break it. Apostle of Hustle has gorgeous drums. The songs are built around them. The driving melodies and lyrics consumed and transformed me into a better person for hearing it. Okay, okay maybe that’s a bit overly dramatic. Just check ‘em out for yourself.
