Tonight if you are in Baltimore you should n0t be anywhere but our friends Aural States’ One Year Anniversary Festival at Sonar. The line up includes a slew of stellar local acts including Arbouretum, Wye Oak, Lo Moda, Small Sur, Sri Aurobindo, Andy Abelow, Imperial China, and Caverns, Pleasant Livers, CANNOT BE STOPPED, Hollywood, Title Tracks (John Davis from Q and Not U/Georgie James). If you are not in Charm City and in DC instead then perhaps you’d like to check in on the next saga of Thievery Corporation in their week long take over of the 9:30 Club. If you’re up in Philly then you’re probably aching to see Lykke Li at the First Unitarian Church with Wildbirds & Peacedrums. If you can’t manage to swing that one, you’re in luck because there’s another fab show over at Johnny Brenda’s featuring Annuals, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and What Laura Says. Enjoy!
In support of their recently released Such Fun album, Annuals are plotting a serious headlining tour starting in January. Check the dates after the jump. Photo by Autumn de Wilde
Annuals have truly been an entertaining band to listen and watch as they’ve expanded and progressed throughout their brief existence. Annuals’ newest album, Such Fun, which sports a delightful Bob Ross original as it’s cover, shows the band in it’s most polished and unified form to date. Such Fun runs through complicated tight instrumentation with deep, rich production not heard on their previous releases. It almost feels like a score to a movie with tense drama rockers and slow moody pleasers. While I do miss some of that rough and raw explosiveness that is evident on earlier albums (there’s still some on Such Fun, just not as constant), I am enjoying the album and look forward to when they come back around town.
Tonight in DC The Rosebuds perform at the Black Cat with The Oranges Band opening for them while over in Arlington, VA The City Veins and The Hard Lessons play Iota. Up in Philly Minus The Bear, Annuals, and Sylvie take on the Fillmore at the TLA while The octopus Project and Jeans Team play the M Room. Enjoy!

Tonight in Baltimore the Ottobar has The Mishaps, All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, Sick Sick Birds, and Thee Lexington Arrows. Down in DC the Black Cat has The Octopus Project and Jeans Team while the 9:30 Club has Minus The Bear, Annuals, and Sylvie. Also in DC at the State Theatre is Broken Social Scene and Land Of Talk. Should be a good one. Enjoy!
The other day MTV’s Subterranean Blog premiered Annuals new video for the track Confessor off of the soon to be released Such Fun album. Annuals have had a great tradition of creating stunning visual representations of their sound and they do it here as well. The video was thought up by band member Zach Oden and illustrated by Daniel Auber (a proud member of the Monty Python animation team). If you’re in the mood for a fairytale…
I’m not sure if you know this already but Annuals have a new album due out on October 7th entitled Such Fun. They’ve just released the cover art for it and it’s by the cult icon painter Bob Ross. Like many of you I grew up watching Mr. Ross tell me where trees could live and perhaps even a little squirrel could be hiding somewhere deep within his pieces while he painted them. He rocks. Apparently Annuals feel the same way:
“The way that Bob made his paintings, and the way he paints in particular, is pretty similar to the way that our band makes a record. Bob Ross starts his paintings with simple little smudges and blotches, making ‘happy trees’ or ‘cute little bridges,’ and he seems to be having ‘such fun’ doing it. But when it’s finished, and his blotches take form, we see that his paintings are actually intricate landscapes – layer on top of layer of what are seemingly a bunch of fun, whimsical drawings are actually quite complicated. Continuing this dichotomy, it seems like all of the happy, lovely places he paints always have a bit of sad loneliness and isolation to them too, and some of the songs on our new album can definitely relate to that duality.”
Any album that has Bob Ross on the cover is sure to be a winner. Here’s the first track off the album:
Wow! In support of Annuals upcoming release of their new album Such Fun on October 7th, they’ve put together a swell fall tour with Minus The Bear. This should be an awesome tour with two bands that have super duper live shows. Hey DC-ers! Circle October 22nd on your calendar. Check the dates after the jump. Photo by Sarah Wilmer
