Animal Collective, fresh off everyone’s top ten list, has just released a new video for the track “Brother Sport” off of Merriweather Post Pavilion. It was directed by Jack Kubizne. Check it out:
I know what you’re thinking…where can I get some off them glow-in-the-dark eggs?
St. Louis DJ/Producer Phaseone has been more than generous this year with not only giving out his Thanks But No Thanks album out for free (see our review here) but now making White Collar Crime, his new mixtape, also up fro grabs. We’ve heard a majority of the tracks before, and they are still sick, but there are a few newbies as well. The grouping includes remixes of Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Bon Iver with El-P, and Raekwon with Blind Man’s Colour. Here’s a selection, but you really should down load the full thing here.
Wow it’s been a busy week for remixes, especially since two prominent and pretty sweet ones came out of none other than Phoenix. Sure there’s been a quadrillion attempts to remix this band and some have shined, some have not. But when Devendra Banhart and Animal Collective are mentioned, one has to be a bit excited. Apparently DB was a fan of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix much like the rest of the world and jumped at the chance to take part in the remix of “Rome” with Neighbors. The re-arranged version is soft, subtle, and beautiful. The same can be said about Animal Co Deakin’s re-imagination of “Love Like A Sunset”. Really this was the song(s) I thought AC would tackle. There are some similar vibes coming off it that naturally meet up with AC’s expansive shimmering sound. Anyway…enough talk…
I’ve been listing to Taken By Trees‘ East Of Eden, their upcoming album out on September 8th via Rough Trade, for the last few weeks now and I’ve decided that it is praiseworthy. Victoria Bergsman went out on a limb and traveled to Pakistan to record the album with sufi musicians. The result is a beautiful amalgam of middle eastern rhythms and vibes sewn together with Bergsman’s soft folk songwriting. An interesting highlight is her translation of perhaps one of the biggest songs of the year – Animal Collective’s “My Girls”. As can be expected it’s a timid affair compared to the original, but I do find that Bergsman does the song justice by reducing it to such a simple form – and re-titles it “My Boys” (perhaps to make it somewhat here own?).
On the flip side of all of this, the first single from East Of Eden “Watch The Waves” has received a re-work courtesy of the mysterious Weird Tapes/Memory Cassette mash Memory Tapes. Take a listen….it’s good.
Still the best album out so far this year in my mind, Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion has a new video for the track “Summertime Clothes”. Directed by Danny Perez, the video features a performance by Brooklyn’s FLEX dance crew that is out of this world – REALLY.
“Daily Routine” was probably the last track I expected to be remixed off of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. The tempo nad rhythmic timing are complex and I thought it would be difficult for a DJ to translate this into a new form. I was wrong. St. Louis’ Phaseone proved me wrong. I guess I’m not surprised since he did a bang up job with Panda Bear’s “I’m Not”. “Daily Routine” gets a dose of heavy bass, hand claps, and a completely restructured rhythm base. I’m ready to test the power of the boombox with this one.
I normally wouldn’t post an unofficial video for a band but Rob Chestnutt’s visuals for Animal Collective’s “My Girls” was pretty impressive. He merges together repetitive film clips that mimic the sounds and the result is quite effective and fit the style of Animal Collective. I really gained interest when some sections of artist Andy Goldsworthy’s Rivers and Tides movie showed up in between random clips. If you haven’t seen this documentary on his works with nature then DO IT. It will inspire you…now…here’s the video:
