Land Of Talk

Somehow and at some point I came upon Land Of Talk’s EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss a ways back and cranked it louder than I should have.  The soulful fury of lead singer Elizabeth Powell struck one of those so-called chords and I had to respond with extra volume.  I’ll admit I was a bit wary of the full length being able to match that rush of emotion I felt on the EP.  Land Of Talk proved me wrong with Some Are Lakes.  Powell unleashes her sincere wrath upon the opening electric strum to the last fading note.  They do slow it down on moments and it doesn’t feel like a let down (“It’s Okay” is one of those moments and it’s a beautiful song).  Justin Vernon of Bon Iver aided Powell, Chris McCarron (bass) and Andrew Barr (drums) while recording the majority of Some Are Lakes in an old refurbished church outside of their hometown of Montreal.  The result is a tireless indie rock record that feels perfect going into the colder months.
