Imagine if The Knife moved to the US, indulged in a serious bout of the Thompson Twins, then went out at night and forgot their shadows (huh?). The result might just be Brooklyn’s Chairlift (yeah, you know, the one on the ipod nano commercial). Caroline Polachek, Aaron Pfenning, and Patrick Wimberly all met up in 2006 in Boulder, Colorado with the common goal of making music for haunted houses. Chairlift’s sound went through several changes and they ended up in Brooklyn in 2007 playing many shows alongside like-minded bands such as MGMT, Yeasayer, and Mixel Pixel. On the outside, Chairlift’s music is synth-pop, but on the inside they escape that moniker and delve into social/personal commentary utilizing their unbelievable knack to create the perfect sound for each mood they want – whether it be playful pop, dirty funk, or slow misty river ballads. Some might be disappointed that Does You Inspire You (their new album) doesn’t continue the Bruises (ipod song) sound all the way through, but I am not one of them. You can currently find Chairlift on tour with Yeasayer (dates after the jump).
