Eureka Birds Need To Be Heard

The Baltimore based band Eureka Birds have a debut album in the works (when I say in the works I mean it’s finished and waiting for release soon).  After my first listen I was pretty blown away.  Their myspace tracks had perked my interest, but the full album really took hold and I was obliged to go along for the ride.  This self titled album has been under construction since early 2007 when Eureka Birds were just a three piece of Justin, Dave, and Allin.  They put together a few demos that they sent to Tyler Watkins (producer/bassist of Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos).  EB’s demos sparked an interest in Watkins’ and they were invited to Indianapolis to record the two songs.  The success of this recording session prompted the three of them to record the rest of the album there at Queensize Twin Air Studios over the next year.  After 15 long spread out days, 5 trips, and 3 drives, the album is complete.  What’s the verdict?  Beautifully orchestrated soft indie pop deriving from (in my opinion) Ben Gibbard, The Decemberists, and Stars.  When I listen to Eureka Birds, I not only feel the emotion from Justin’s lyrics, but the performance and craft of each song tells a sophisticated story that supports the words.  Eureka Birds is definitely a local band to keep your eyes (and ears) out for.
