The other week Stardeath and White Dwarfs‘ The Birth LP appeared on my doorstep. I had never heard of them, but the album cover looked very Flaming Lips-ish so I figured that could be a good thing. Their name, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, screams psychedelic rock and the way the opening track “The Sea Of Fire” starts, I was sure that’s what I was getting into. But as the song/album progress that preconceived notion of genre placement quickly vanished. SAWD actually have much in common with the Flaming Lips (perhaps that’s why they toured with them? or perhaps because Wayne Coyne is the uncle of lead singer Dennis Coyne? perhaps.) with a malleable sound that’s hard to label but usually falls under the title experimental rock. Other bands like Zappa, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart have similarities as well and also fall under that weird rock label. You get the point. The real deal is that many bands try to match that sound and fail, but Stardeath and White Dwarfs come out on top and have produced a formidable album in The Birth.
