Experimental band from Nebraska, Uuvvwwz, caught my eye for having a name that I didn’t dare try to pronounce. Would their music be as much as an enigma as their double lettered name suggests? Not entirely, but they definitely keep you guessing. And it also doesn’t mean that they’re bad either. Actually their S/T album (out on Saddle Creek) has seriously grown on me over a few listens. Like Deerhoof or perhaps Micachu, Uuvvwwz’s music is not for everyone. Sometimes it’s insane, then soft spoken, then jazzy, then punked out, then spastic, then calm, etc. Generally it’s hard to be in the “mood” for this type of album because this album has every mood you could possibly be in squeezed into a 9 track 42 minute session. But that’s what Uuvvwwz is and they’re friggin’ amazing at doing it. Teal Gardner has one of those smoking voices that can shift through so many worlds in such a brief time – from sultry to fierce in under sixty seconds. And the band backs her up with some extremely tight riffs and drums.
So yes I enjoyed this tilt a whirl of an album because I enjoy manic music that keeps me on the edge. The only hard part is trying to verbally recommend them to friends – “Hey you should check out umm…Yoouuvviiiwwhaahzeh”. Actually the band pronounces it Double U Double V Double W Z.
