Suggested Listening: Mouthful Of Bees

When you hear the name Mouthful Of Bees, what feeling does it drum up?  Pain?  Certainly.  Terror?  Possibly.  General unpleasantness?  Yeah, that’s what I thought.  Completely misleading considering the band with the aforementioned name, Mouthful Of Bees, does not produce music sounding at all like the feelings the name suggests….but that probably could be said about a lot of bands and their names.  Moving forward…Mouthful Of Bees is a soft pop rock four piece made up of the brother/sister duo Chris and Kate Farstad, Micky Alfano, and Mark Ritsema.  They have just released a self titled album on Afternoon Records and I give it some serious props.  With the help of two additional members, Simon Larson and Patrick Swanson, Mouthful Of Bees build this album around a charming, melodic, soft pop world that is generally moderate tempo with the occasionally outburst to keep you on your toes.  There’s a ton more substance in it as well as opposed to many bands that tread down this genre’s road.  Layered pianos, piano string plucks, flutes, bells, and odd noises that I can’t quite place litter the ground of many of the tracks on the album.  Of course there’s the standard guitars, bass, and drums as well.  When they all meet up together they manifest sometimes into smokey mysticals or jazzy strolls or vibrant sprints or somber sunsets or easy Sunday mornings.  It’s a treat from Mouthful Of Bees to you…and luckily it feels nothing like a mouthful of bees.

  • Two things:

    1) This album includes two new members of the band: Simon Larson (who recorded and mixed the album) and Patrick Swanson (contributed two songs, including Thomas Aquinas).

    2) Your link to Afternoon records should have told you this. Maybe this link will provide the information you seek… (http://www.afternoonrecords.com/artists/mouthfulofbees).

Check out their first album, “The End”, when the band was a foursome and you might find a little more sting too.

  • Please correct your post to include all 6 members of the band. You did not list Simon Larson or Patrick Swanson, who are also members of the band.

Please check out their first album “The End.” Much more up-tempo stuff and with the line-up you’ve listed here.
