On May 26th the now 6 piece Black Moth Super Rainbow will release the follow up to 2007 Dandelion Gum. This new album out on Graveface is entitled Eating Us and has the band doing things it’s never done before. That is drifting into the realm of hi-fi recording. Eating Us was recorded at Tarbox Road Studios (their first venture into a real recording studio) while being produced by David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT). What effect did this have on the album? It’s a more developed sound. Eating Us presents a richer blend of a similar style we all fell in love with on Dandelion Gum. And when I say richer, I mean trippier. Black Moth Super Rainbow have that swirly psych rock twisted vocal trancey “ooh the colors” sound down and don’t stray too far from their comfort zone on Eating Us. And I never wanted them to. Though this album doe have lighter more melancholy moments that I had yet to hear them produce. These feathery moments gives the album real body and life. Instead of one stream of consciousness candy rainbow, there’s a dip or two to let you contemplate, relax, and digest what you just heard a bit. So if you’ve got a sunny Sunday afternoon with nothing to do, drop this album on some sugar cubes and have a nice day.
