Moderat is the collaboration of two prominent German electronic artists – Modeselektor and Apparat. They started the group a few years back and put out a notable release then took a break and went onto each gain notoriety with their solo acts. Now they’re back together and have released a debut self titled album. If you are familiar with both artists you can expect that there’s no dance floor bangers on this one. Largely atmospheric, sometimes peaceful, sometimes industrious, sometimes instrumental, but occasionally some vocals find their way in. My favorite “vocalized” track has to be “Rusty Nails” which features the surprisingly pleasant pipes of Sascha Ring (aka Apparat). The highlight of the album for me though is the slow building and divine opener “A New Error”. This subtle synth track sets the table for the rest of the album. Moderat is out now via BPitch Control and is also available as a limited edition DVD produced by Berlin based artist collective Pfadfinderei who will also contribute to the visuals of Moderat’s live shows.
