Suggested Listening: Blake Miller’s “Burn Tape”

I guess I completely missed the boat with Blake Miller at first.  Back in 2007 the then 19 year old Miller and his debut, Together With Cats, garnered some pretty high acclaim from Pitchfork and he received comparisons to Devendra Banhart, Grizzly Bear, and Ron Sexsmith.  So two years later I finally catch on because of his new release, Burn Tape (Exit Stencil) which is actually out on cassette (and digital and eventually cd).  Immediately I recognized the immediacy and uninhibited nature of Miller’s songwriting.  Each song feels like he’s right in the room with you sharing his new ideas.  The low fi production and implementation of extra instruments can sometimes fall short or be a bit disconcerting (it’s minor really), but overall for me the voice and lyrics of Miller are phenomenal and quite enjoyable.
