Suggested Listening: Arbouretum’s “Song Of The Pearl”

It’s taken me a little while to fully grasp what exactly I was listening to when I first tried out Baltimore band Arbouretum’s new Thrill Jockey release Song Of The Pearl.  I have always been interested in their sound from afar – dabbling in a song or two – but never quite latching on.  Song Of The Pearl caught me on the right rainy night when my emotions had worn down…the slow rumble of Dave Heumann voice lurking beneath wild thunderous guitars and blues thrash drums perked my ears and drew me in.  Somehow Dylan and Young merged with Zeppelin and Floyd who melted with Black Sabbath and Danzig.  Doom folk is the genre Arbouretum, but sometimes it’s more like folk folk doom or doom doom folk or doom doom rock…you get the idea.  Song Of The Pearl is that nuanced – flowing from one extreme to the next.  I couldn’t ask for more.
