Back in 2007 Elvis Perkins released Ash Wednesday, a heartfelt, powerful, yet soft spoken album that was deeply personal to him. His life had a lot of texture to it (his dad played Norman Bates in Psycho, his mom was a photographer who was killed on American Airlines Flight 11 on 9/11), so I imagine music was an outlet for these highs and lows. Sometimes Ash Wednesday was almost too much for me because of that (still beautiful and one of 2007’s pleasant surprises). Mr. Perkins is back and this time he’s come fully loaded with a new band – thus the name change to Elvis Perkins In Dearland. Perkins formed the band to tour with after the release of Ash Wednesday and was quick to recognize the spark that was ignited when they played live. This new self titled band debut was an attempt to capture that energy and put it on wax. Elvis Perkins In Dearland does just that. There are still soft moments that remind me of Ash Wednesday on the album, but overall it’s a more up beat and bright affair. You can purchase the album on Amie Street for just $8 and $2 of it will be donated to Clearwater, an organization founded by Pete Seeger that’s dedicated to protecting, restoring and celebrating the Hudson River.
