I wasn’t sure what to expect when I popped in the Height With Friends‘ Baltimore Highlands disc to my car stereo…but now I find that it hasn’t left the stereo in a while. Baltimore Highlands is Wham City’s newest release and is a hip hop album that breaks the mold in all the right places. There’s definitely an old school vibe through out mixing hooking samples with roughed up beats….it’s Height’s lyrics that really stretch this one out into a winner. He talks about excursions into nature, darkness, politics, and love…with a poetic delivery. When I listen I keep picturing a twilight journey through Druid Hill Park with glow sticks lighting the way and a boom box providing the soundtrack. That’s just me though. My interest in hip hop has steadily decreased over the years, but Baltimore Highlands gives me hope and throws another log onto that dying fire.
